Eulogy

[Excerpt from funeral eulogy given January 9th, 2015 for Gerald Warrington by his daughter Jennifer Simms]

My dad was a small guy in stature, only 5 feet 6. But he had a big spirit and he liked people. He was a country boy and he liked his classic country music. He enjoyed going to Paul’s Creek Campground on Friday nights to listen to the old country music and to dance with mom. He was happy to be around his extended family and his friends, drinking a cold beer on a hot summer day and sharing the latest local news, he was comfortable just being in the company of others. Not the biggest or loudest guy in the group, just in the group, and happy to be there.

No doubt dad was a hard worker and he was strong. He left home and school at the age of 16 to take a job with CP Telecommunications as a lineman, working with his hands for 22 years to put in place telecommunications lines to connect people across communities. He became close friends with the people he worked with, bunking with them on boarding cars, swapping stories and smokes, sometimes “twisting wrists” which he was really good at, and playing cribbage in the evenings. He always remembered the friends he made at work long after his days with the railroad were over and he would tell us stories of them. He also spent some years working with Ontario Hydro as a groundman and held various jobs in his later years, including with the North Frontenac telephone company, various local sawmills and he even delivered mail from time to time in his retirement. But throughout it all he always preferred to work outside with his hands, no walls between him and the great outdoors. One of the things he tried to teach us, no doubt because of all his years working outside in the cold and wind and rain, was to always be alert to the weather and know how to dress for it. I doubt anyone else owned as many warm socks as him.

Dad liked his routines, especially in his retirement. Drinking his two cups of coffee in the morning, playing his scratch and lotto tickets, watching his favourite soap operas – the Young and the Restless and Coronation Street, loyally cheering on his hockey team the Montreal Canadians. Above all he loved to spend time alone sitting on his porch in peace. It was a place where he could recharge. A place where he could relax and watch the changing seasons, be entertained by his bird feeders, listen to his wind chimes and observe the neighbourhood traffic. Many of you will remember how much he looked forward to the spring each year because that was when he could go hunting for morels along the railroad tracks and in the woods. In the summers there were the annual chicken fry’s with the Parks family and over the years he had his hand in frying up a drumstick or two. He spent a lot of time fishing and he really liked to ice fish. I still remember how proud he was of the 12 pound pickeral he caught in St George’s Lake one winter when he was ice fishing with his brother Ken, he had it mounted in our living room. And I remember how much he loved to snowmobile in the winter, often giving us kids a ride. He was an excellent driver overall, although he may have banged up a car or two in his youthful days. In recent years, when mom saw their car gone, she always knew without asking that he was off to the local dump. What should have taken a few minutes often took him hours. He could usually be found catching up with an old friend he ran into along the way. He also liked to stop and feed peanuts to the chipmunks. Over the years, he just loved to visit with his neighbours and relatives around Maberly. He was a kind man. He kept things simple.

He loved my mother dearly and told her so every day. She took good care of him. They were fortunate enough to spend 40 years together married. My dad was a quiet guy but Todd and I saw that he worked hard for us over the years, we knew that he loved us, and that he was proud of who we were. He was with us long enough to know our partners Shaun and Jackie and to welcome his grandchildren Kazha, Drusus and Anthony into his life.

Saying farewell isn’t easy. My dad had to do the same as he lost many dear members of his family and close friends over the years. But he found solace in the things he liked to do, his routines and rituals, his simple pleasures, and the people of his community – all his family and friends – who were still around him who opened their doors to let him in. The many people with whom he could count on to share a story and a laugh.

Maberly will always be dad’s home. He settled there early and he never wanted to leave. Now he will never have to. May we find peace in that fact, and that, over his many years, his company was so very welcome.

My Uncle Gerald

I was very sad to hear of my Uncle Gerald's passing. He was very close to our family - often spending vacation time with us when we lived in Beachville, Woodstock and North Bay. I remember when he was visiting in Beachville and he overheard my Dad calling me by my nickname "Squirrel" and every time I've been in Uncle Gerald's company since that day that nickname would rear its ugly head!

Uncle Gerald was a hardworking man - never turning down work! He was also a very strong man - witnessing many a men being defeated by an arm wrestle with him.

My Dad and Gerald would always compete with the amount of Morels they were able to find and pick - neither of them divulging their secret spots!

Gerald loved old country music - swinging Ann around the dance floor at every single wedding they attended - it was pretty cool to watch - they were so in sync!

Uncle Gerald's claim to fame was being crowned the "Chicken Fry King of Maberly". He accepted and performed this title with the utmost importance and not a chicken leg, breast or thigh was sent back to the pan!

I remember when he attended my wedding in Hamilton and he went to pay for his beer but was told that it was an open bar - he wasn't sure what that meant so I told him that he does not have to pay for any drinks at my wedding - he turned to me - smiled - he was a very happy man!

I could go on and on recalling all the memories I have of my Uncle Gerald, but I will save all those stories for future get togethers/reunions.

In ending, rest in peace Uncle Gerald - say hello to all the family members that you are sitting with right now - probably sharing a cold beer - playing a game of Euchre or watching a Habs game (if Dad will allow you) and chowing down on a chicken leg while listening to your favorite country song!

Love Elaine nee "Squirrel"

I would like to thank my sister, Diane, for reading this note at the service today.

My Wee Unc

Well it's been a rough couple of days! My Wee Unc (Gerald Robert Warrington) passed suddenly on Jan.3 2015 the same date as my Father in 1993! Uncle Gerald spoiled me like crazy when he came to North Bay, and I was in single digits for age, but Dad would give him a tongue lashing for buying me presents, like a big ol Tonka Grader but everything was always fine the next morning! He treated me like I was something special through out his life, and I always Loved him for that. I... remember driving his car when I was really young on his lap, but I kept swerving to the ditch so that was enough of that, HehHeh... We used to go Morel hunting in my younger days, We found a few but funny we never got to his good patches HehHeh... But Uncle Gerald and Ann the kids always found time to be with Cindy and I when called, and we enjoyed every second that they were at an event mostly BBQs, even for a visit when Cindy and I were on our Honeymoon at the Lake! We shall miss you my Wee Unc, you were One Of A Kind. Love You So Much!!!!
