Life Lessons Hi Nick. I know you can't hear me anymore but I like to believe you can. Anyway, I just want to say thanks for teaching me so much. From the second you laid eyes on me, you became my teacher. Remember when I first moved to Canada from the States and you taught me how to speak like a Canadian, walk like a Canadian, and play hockey like a Canadian? I remember when I couldn't perform a slapshot and you said that was OK because I didn't need to be good at hockey, as long as I was enjoying myself. I also remember in Mrs Sloan's grade eight class back at Queen E. (you remember Queen E. right?) I told you I had never ever been picked first for gym class before. So the very next gym class you picked me first. I didn't care that you were doing it just because you felt sorry for me and I still don't. You were kind to me and accepted me when not a lot of other people did. But I think my best memory of you was talking on bus rides home from Queen E. When you moved out closer to where I lived and when most of the other kids had gotten off the bus and it was just the two of us we'd talk until it was time for you to get off. My most prominent memory of you was when I was really upset because I wanted to be an actress when I grew up but my dad wanted me to be a businessman like him. Remember what you said to me? I remember it perfectly. You said, "Follow your heart, not your head." Then you smiled at me and got off the bus. After that, I stopped crying because for once in my life someone loved me just the way I was. Whenever you smiled at me I smiled too, no matter how hard I was crying before. Because how could I be sad when you were there to brighten up my day? Anyway, it looks like it's your turn to get off the bus. Don't worry, I can handle myself from here. Just want to let you know that I'm living by your words. I'm going to be going to Sheridan in September for Media Arts. I'm working behind the camera now, but that was my decision. When I visited you today, the only thing I could think of was your smile and how you always smiled at me when I was sad. Then I saw everyone crying and your family and friends looking solemn. Then I realized they were like that because you weren't there to smile anymore. So I smiled for you. Not quite the same thing, but when I told your parents and brother that your smile always made me feel better, they smiled too. So from now on, whenever I smile I'll think of you. All the stories There are far too many stories to share. Rick & Sue were like an aunt and uncle to me, so Luke and Nick (formerly Nicky) were like cousins. I am 10 years older than Nicky, and I babysat him a number of times. I remember Nick and Luke playing together, and fighting together (as all brothers do!). Nick could be a kind, thoughtful boy, and five minutes later a rambunctious little boy. One time I was just looking after Nicky, and we baked chocolate rice crispie squares together. He thought I was crazy as we walked back and forth to the store twice (as I had forgotten an ingredient the first time). As he grew up, he was becoming a successful young man. His story ended far too soon. I love you Nicky.
