Dear Arlene,
We are very sadden to hear of Jaffray's passing. We have such fond memories of playing golf with you and Jaffray at the Links. We very much admired his leadership in the golf club and with how he help the fund advancement group during the sale of the golf course. We also enjoyed seeing him at Probus and chatting with you both at the Probus Christmas dinners. Jaffray was always so friendly and interested in what we were doing. We will miss him. Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers at this time. We are sorry we cannot be with you in person as we are on a road trip in the United States. Love, Jeanne and Dale

Jaffray left the world a better place. In his public life, he was a wonderful boss and leader, willing to share insights and challenging others to excel. In his private life, he delighted in family photos and stories, lake swims, boat tours and country walks. He appreciated wildlife, with birds and snakes on the top- skunks and raccoons on the bottom. Mostly, he appreciated and loved Arlene. He will be very much missed. We send our deepest condolences to Arlene and the family.

Our sincere condolences. As a middle manager in the late 70's I fondly remember a visit in Sarnia from one of our most senior staff in Ottawa. Mr. Wilkins had the personal foresight to know the names of the senior personnel and was most appreciative when I gave him a tour of the local Coast Guard facilities. What was appreciated more was the fact that on his return to Ottawa he took the time to draft a letter to me thanking me for the tour AND naming other key personnel that he had met. It showed a professional and personal commitment to the people who worked for him and impressed us to no end. The Public Service of Canada lost a great role model when he retired. He set an excellent example and I will always remember him fondly.

Jaffray - Mentor extra-ordinaire
Jaffray was the Assistant Deputy Minister of Personnel at Transport Canada when I met him in 1977. I had joined the Department as the Equal Opportunities for Women Coordinator, not a role that was popular with about 95% of the Department's staff. Jaffray was a strong supporter of women in the workplace and staunchly defended the program. He was a patient teacher and provided invaluable guidance and support, both to the program and my own personal career aspirations. On a personal level, he and Arlene were so kind and supportive when my father passed away in 1978. While my move to Vancouver 20 years ago has meant we have not had personal contact in a while, we have stayed in touch over the years and have kept connected through mutual friends Robin Lee Monroe and Barb Fulton. Thank you Jaffray for your guidance and friendship. Every condolence to Arlene and your family.

A man of dignity, wisdom, friendship & humour
I first knew Jaff as a figure of awesome seniority and authority, when I joined CSE (then known as CBNRC) straight out of Western. Years later, he became a colleague, then a friend. He showed up one day at Treasury Board, I was called to the DepSec's office and Jaff's first words were, "Hello, you're working for me now." I spent the next six months at ACOA, watching Jaff advising Ministers and Deputy Ministers on how to navigate the shoals and politics of the Maritime Provinces that he knew and loved so well. Heather and I enjoyed many social occasions in the company of Jaff and Arlene, especially their legendary May Day parties. After one such, Jaff wanted to show off his marksmanship, hauled out his .22 varmint rifle and took aim at a pesky squirrel. Unfortunately, the weapon was resting on part of the window frame, so when he pulled the trigger, the double-glazing shattered, to his chagrin and curses. Not only did the squirrel scamper off unscathed, but Jaff's Scottish heritage faced the cost of a new window! And more recently, I was called to the swimming dock after one of the daily skinny dips Jaff so enjoyed, even on days no other mortal would consider swimming weather. The swimming ladder had suddenly parted from the dock, so I found a stepladder and lowered it into the water so that Jaff could clamber slowly up and out. Arlene and Heather hauled and steadied him, while I was face down on the dock, holding the ladder. As he knelt panting on the dock, I knew what I would face if I turned my head, but Jaff nonetheless warned "Keep your eyes averted, young man, or you will be in the water too!"
