I had great respect for your father, Mike, and he had a big influence on my life.
I had my first job in law working primarily with Mike at his former firm in Smiths Falls many years ago. I learned a great deal that summer both in terms of the law but more importantly many practical and important life lessons.
All who knew Mike are well aware of his ability to relate to and communicate effectively and honestly with persons from all backgrounds and walks of life. He had a genuine interest in people and in helping them.
I know that he had a positive influence on countless persons from Smiths Falls and beyond and he will be sorely missed.
I look back fondly on the time that I got to spend with Mike. He was an interesting and engaging man and there was never a dull moment while in his company.
I also respect how well rounded a person he was: a family man, a lawyer, a business man, later a judge, a golfer, a sports fan, a significant contributor to his community and friend to all.
Mike has always been and will continue to be a role model and inspiration for me.
Deepest condolences to your family in such a loss. However, I hope that you can find some comfort in looking back on the life that he led and the positive contributions that he made to so many in so many different ways.

Katie, Beth & the entire Quigley Family
When someone we love becomes a memory that memory becomes a “Treasure”. Your Dad was indeed a treasure of the rarest kind and quite frankly they do not make them like your Dad anymore! We are so saddened and with heavy heart to hear of your Dad’s passing.
Our community and parts far beyond the Falls are far poorer and the “Bench” respectively has been diminished with Mike’s passing. I echo all that has been said about your Dad in his beautiful obituary and what everyone else has been saying about your Dad. He was one of a kind and rare - he was the best and there is none other like your Dad!
Mike’s passing brings an end of an era to the Justice and legal community - he was the epitome of what a good, just, fair, compassionate, empathetic, dignified & honourable Justice is and looks like - he was a great defender of the Law and more importantly the spirit of the Law.
However, despite being a brilliant Justice he was first and foremost an outstanding human being who never forgot where he came from and he always put others before self! He was a an exceptionally good man who placed priority on his God, his loving wife and children, his friends, his Country and total strangers were blessed to have crossed his path. He was the total post card picture of what a true gentleman personifies - a loving, kind, friendly, giving, witty, charming, decent, understanding, respectful, thoughtful, strong, honest to a fault and he was a man of impeccable character and enormous integrity! He had such a presence that made everyone feel welcome and important and to top it off he carried himself with an elegance that only he could pull off.
Mike and my family were best of friends especially with my Dad - they truly enjoyed over 50yrs of friendship and Mike was a true friend to my Dad and our family. One example of Mike’s friendship and kindness shown to me was way back in 1985 when I asked Mike if he would consider being a reference for me for a career dream I had - a position with the O.P.P. - little did I know or expect that Mike would personally write a letter to the then Solictor General of Ontario singing my praises and recommending me for the position of Constable - my dream came true and I was hired on - looking back there is no doubt that Mike’s support and qood name were instrumental in my success. I have always been so grateful to Mike over my career and life for his support and most importantly friendship. I love this quote on friendship and it so fitting for Mike - goes like this - “Friends are like the rare jewels in life - they are difficult to find & impossible to replace”.
Your Honour - it’s been my honour to have been your friend and to have enjoyed your company - I’m better for knowing you and your friendship is truly cherished! You have done your duty and have more than earned your rest. Farewell old Friend and God Bless you and your family! Heaven now has very able Counsel!
You will truly be missed - rest in peace my Friend

Katie and Beth and all your families, my sincere condolences on your father's passing. It was a privilege and a blessing for me to get to know him and your mum after he was appointed to the Bench. He may have been a 'rookie' judge, but you can't teach the most important aspects of being a judge, things that Mike had in abundance - an innate sense of what is right, of respect for everyone no matter their background, or political or philosophical leanings. His sense of humour rescued many a work day which would otherwise have been very stressful or unhappy. Mike was an excellent lawyer, and an outstanding judge, but most of all to me, he was my friend. I shall go forward with that friendship and be better for it,

Dear Katie, Beth, and family,
Please accept our sincere condolences for the loss of Mike. I have such fond memories of the many conversations I had with both Mike and Ann. One of those conversations began with a question that was asked by Mike: What has the Lord been doing in your life? It took me aback and made me reflect. I still think about that question from time to time. One of the many ways that the Lord has worked in my life is to have had Mike as part of my life. My appreciation and respect for him is endless, and I know he will be missed terribly. I prayed my Chaplet of Divine Mercy for Mike this afternoon, and he (and all of you) will continue to be in our prayers. May the Lord bless and comfort you all in your time of grief and may your many memories of Mike bring you joy.

I did not know Mike before I became his court colleague in 2003. However, his dedication to fairness, hard work and the cause of Justice were well known in the legal community. After my own appointment in 2003, Mike became a mentor, a supporter, a confidant and a friend. I welcomed work assignments in Brockville and Perth where Mike was administrative justice. No matter how challenging the work assignments, it often felt festive to be around Mike. Our friendship deepened when Ann became ill with Guillane Barre Syndrome, an illness that she shared in common with my spouse, Eugene. Our visits with Mike and Ann during this period were followed by many more at the Cancer Center after Ann became a patient there. The nursing staff came to know Eugene as Ann’s “boyfriend “, with Mike’s blessing, of course! When Ann passed away in 2020, we shared frequent dinners in Smith Falls, including overnight visits punctuated by long conversations when Mike regaled us with stories about the good times spent with Ann. He was deeply proud of her achievements and those of his beloved Kate and Beth. He did not speak of his own, which were many. Mike loved life and spoke often about his blessings. Yet, he was unafraid of death. While he welcomed the end of his suffering, it was contrary to his faith to hasten the end, despite his wish to be reunited with Ann. His mind, and spirit were remarkably strong. His memory is safe in our hearts.
Giovanna (and Eugene aka “ the Boyfriend”)

Dear Katie and Beth,
Dale and I are much saddened to learn of your Dad’s passing. He was a wonderful man, impish and mischievous, with a marvellous gift for telling a story the Irish way, and is there any other? And he was a great judge, with all the attributes a good judge should have: empathy, fairness, firmness and a sense of doing the right thing in my situation.
As you know, we were the two “Quigley J.’s” on the Ontario Superior Court with only our middle names differing. His email address was Michael.Quigley@…but when I came on in 2005, I was properly designated behind him as Michael.Quigley2@… Even since his retirement the “2” has still been in my email address until I retired in September after 20 years, which suited me fine.
I knew your father for many years before his appointment and my later appointment, because we shared political and religious orientations. And, not surprisingly, we regularly received each others mail. When he learned that I had put my name in, he called me and we spoke many times of the process, and of course he had so many stories.
One of the most memorable stories happened in 2005, just after I was appointed. I was invited to attend my first semi annual SCJO Judges Conference. After the opening session I went to the hospitality suite and there he was. He raced towards me, gave me a firm congratulatory handshake and a hug, and then said he had a gift to give me. Out of his pocket he pulled my first judicial pay stub but which had been addressed and sent to him rather than me! He said if it weren’t such a paltry sum, he would have spent it on a vacation to Brazil!
Needless to say, the Commissioner fixed that error, but it was always a highlight of the semi annual conferences, whether in Ottawa or elsewhere, to be able to commiserate with both your Dad, and dear Ann, your Mom, who was a ton of fun in her own right. She was a lovely and graceful lady with the same twinkle in her eye that he always had in his. I’m sorry I only learned of her passing months after it happened.
I’m happy to learn that his passing was peaceful, with his beloved family with him, and that he did drag the last story on for a few more minutes! Though I have not seen him since his retirement, I think of him often, and I will miss him, but he will remain in the Pantheon of special people who have been a special part of my own journey, for as long as I draw breath.
Please know that both of you and your families will be in my thoughts and prayers, and I hope that your grief will soon start to be buoyed by wonderful memories of fun and laughter together.
Best
Michael

To the Quigley Family...My name is Susan Hodge Carroll, my family lived in Smiths Falls. When my Dad passed away, we had the traditional wakes and funeral, that they did back in 1982. A gentleman walked in and
I remember asking my sister who he was, and she didn't know either. So, the gentleman, came up to us, he introduced himself and told us why he was there.
He said he was Michael Quigley, (and being a small town, we knew the name), and that he had worked one summer with my Dad, when he (Mike) was a teenager and he always remember my Dad. He said he saw the obituary, for Clarence (Cy) Hodge remembered him and wanted to pay his respects. I believe it was when Dad was working on the railroad, but I'm not sure about that part.
What I am sure of, is how it made me feel...I don't even know if I can describe the feeling, I was so proud of my Dad and so thankful to your Dad, for making that effort to let us know that my Dad, obviously, made an impression on him. Anyway, I have always remembered that, and cherished that memory. Your Dad was an exceptional man. May all your beautiful memories of him give you peace and contentment, during the difficult times. Thank you!
