Obituary of David Henry Simpkin
Simpkin, David H.
April 4th, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Simpkin, a devoted husband, cherished father, loyal friend, and proud veteran, who left us unexpectedly from a heart attack on April 4, 2025. Dave’s life was a testament to love, laughter, and the joy of simple moments shared with those he held dear.
Dave is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy Litalien, and their two extraordinary sons, Sacha and James, both 19, who were the pride and joy of his life. He was a man of unwavering strength and kindness, whose love for his family knew no bounds.
Dave will also be sadly missed by his mother Susan Simpkin of Kenora, ON; brother, Stephen Simpkin and his wife Lorraine of Kenora, ON; sister Kate Simpkin of Olds, AB; and his very much-loved nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. He is predeceased by his dad David and his big sister Tilly.
A proud member of the Royal Canadian Regiment and the Canadian Airborne Regiment, Dave served his country with honour in Canada and on tours in the former Republic of Yugoslavia and Rwanda. He carried the values of loyalty and camaraderie into every aspect of his life. His humour was legendary—he could light up any room with his quick wit and infectious laughter, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
As a heritage carpenter he used his skills to revitalize parts of the Parliament buildings, yet he was most proud of constructing the family home – including all the decks on the property, the family sugar shack, and the dining room table. Dave’s craftsmanship was admired by many, but it was his ability to build connections and memories that truly defined him.
Whether it was collecting maple sap with his boys, skiing down snowy slopes, or casting a line on a quiet fishing trip, Dave found his greatest happiness in the great outdoors, surrounded by family and friends. The lucky ones were also given a glimpse into Dave’s obscure passion projects such as aquaponics, the restoration of two Ford Mustangs, and his fascination with antique Cox engines, perfect for flying balsawood planes.
Dave’s legacy is one of love, resilience, and an unyielding zest for life. He taught his sons the importance of integrity, courage, and finding joy in the little things. To Kathy, he was not only a partner but a soul mate, whose love and support were the foundation of their beautiful life together.
A celebration of Dave’s life will be held on Monday April 14th, 2025 from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. (with a few spoken words at 1:30 P.M.) at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 244, 26 Beckwith St. E., Perth where we will honour his memory in the way he would have wanted—with laughter, stories, relaxed dress, and plenty of poutine. All who knew and loved Dave are invited to join us in celebrating a life well-lived and a man deeply loved and respected. Dave, you will forever be in our hearts. Your love, strength, and laughter will guide us always. We love you.
In lieu of flowers and in honour of Dave’s generous spirit and commitment to helping others, the family kindly invites you to consider a no-obligation donation to www.pdcf.ca, click on the Donate button, and find the Simpkin-Litalien Family Fund which will support youth mental health.
Arrangements are in the care of Blair & Son Funeral Directors, Perth.
