Obituary of John Matthew Douwes

Douwes, John M.

With profound sadness we announce the passing of John on Saturday, December 13, 2025 at the age of 71.  Beloved husband for 52 years and soulmate of Marilyn Douwes (nee Porter).  Much loved father of Jennifer Douwes (Ryan Carroll) and Jessica Douwes (Mark Matthews).  Loved Pake to his grandchildren Hayley, Avery, Zoe and Owen.  Loved son of Frances Vandersluis (the late George) and the late Ted Douwes.  Dear brother of Janet Crawford (the late Andy), Charles “Chuck” Douwes, Ronald Douwes (Barbara) and the late Sandra Bouwma (surviving George).  Brother-in-law of Karen Lomas (Tom), Barry Porter (Dianne),  Peggy Gravel (Andre), Trudy Kniss (Gary), the late Keith Porter and son-in-law of Vivian Wray (the late Austin Porter).  Fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and many good friends.

As a young man, John enlisted in the Canadian Military, serving in Canada, Germany and Syria over a 20-year career, and retiring as a Sergeant.  Following the military, John worked another 20 years in the private sector and civil service, retiring at age 62.  He was an avid reader, huge sports fan and loved a game of cards.  John will be lovingly remembered by his family and all who were close to him.

Family and friends are invited to gather for John’s Celebration of Life on Monday, December 22, 2025 at Settlers Square, 260 Brockville St., Smiths Falls from 11:00-2:00 p.m.  Special thanks to Maria and the rest of the nursing staff and support team of the Smiths Falls Hospital.   In memory of John, donations to The University of Ottawa Heart Institute or the Perth & Smiths Falls District Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.  Arrangements are in the care of Blair & Son Funeral Directors, Smiths Falls.
