Obituary of Stanley Wesley Willoughby
Stan passed away at the Smiths Falls hospital surrounded by the love of his family on Monday January 26th, 2026, after a short but courageous fight with cancer.
Stan was the beloved husband and best friend for more than 48 years to Nancy (nee Burchill) Willoughby. He was the loving and devoted father to Amie Willoughby (Martin Scherer) and Jenna Willoughby (Brandon Tozzo). Proud grandfather to Elliot and Oliver Scherer and Colson and Isla Tozzo. Stan will be sadly missed by his siblings Tim, Earl (Rose), Dave (Pauline), Joe Willoughby. He was predeceased by his brother Walter Willoughby and his sisters Nancy Purcell and Kathy Garton. He will be fondly remembered by sister-in-law Sharon Willoughby, and Donna Burchill-McConnell (Donald McConnell), and his brother-in-law Warren Garton, as well as his many nieces, nephews, extended family and so many friends in Smiths Falls and surrounding communities.
Stan had an incredible work ethic and drove transport trucks for more than 40 years to create a wonderful home and life for his family. When he retired from Erb Transport at the age of 65, Stan needed to keep busy. He moved on to drive locally for Quattrocchi’s for another 6 years, and to start his own lawn maintenance business. Stan loved to be outside in good weather, and to have the chance to work and visit with so many people around Smiths Falls.
Stan was a caring and present father. From bike rides and bed time with his daughters, to being the loudest supporter at softball and skating competitions, he took amazing pride in his family and never missed an important event. Stan spent his free time doing small woodworking projects, taking meticulous care of his home and tools, and helping neighbours. Many call him the Mayor of Montgomery Place: once people moved on to the block they became extended family to the Willoughbys. He used his time to make the world brighter in his own way. You couldn’t meet Stan without befriending him. He was a listener: he was interested to learn about others and their families, and he remembered details and important events in other people’s lives. He enjoyed simple pleasures like a great BBQ, driving his Corvette, seeing live music, any chance for celebration, and having a beer or tea with friends in the backyard gazebo.
Stan’s grandchildren brought him joy every single day. He loved his family with his entire being, and took every chance to be together. He enjoyed breakfast and ice cream out, talking sports, and watching movies with Elliot and Oliver in Guelph, and going on local adventures, dancing, pushing a swing or a bike, and watching a show with Isla and Colson in Kingston. Stan knew these family moments were a gift and he was grateful for them all.
He will be missed more than words could ever express. His legacy will live on through acts of generosity and kindness through all of those he loved.
Friends many pay their respects at Blair & Son Funeral Home on Sunday, February 8, 2026, from 12:00-4:00 p.m. A service to celebrate his life will take place in the Chapel on Monday at 11 a.m. A private interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Smiths Falls Food Bank.
