GERVAIS, Joseph Douglas (born Joseph Arthur Douglas Gervais)

On June 28, 2026, Joseph Douglas Gervais, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital (Perth Site) at the age of 93. Born in Hull, Quebec on July 1, 1932, Doug shared a deeply special relationship with Irene E. (McSorley) Gervais, who raised him as a child with immense love and devotion. Later in life, through his own extensive genealogical research at age 67, Doug proudly uncovered and documented his full birth and baptismal history, updating the family tree to reflect his full birth name, Joseph Arthur Douglas Gervais, honoring the history of the Gervais-Kenney-St. Jean clan.
At St-Joseph's Church in Paris, France, on May 22, 1954, Doug married the absolute love of his life, Shirley Ann Desloges. Together, they shared a remarkable 72 years of marriage and raised their four treasured children: Estelle, Dale, Ross, and Lisa.
Doug enjoyed a fascinating and highly fulfilling 37-year career with the federal government of Canada in the Department of External Affairs (now Global Affairs Canada). His passion for his work took his family across the globe. He lived and served on postings abroad in Paris, Boston, The Hague, New York City, Lagos, Beirut, and Damascus. His dedicated service also included extended diplomatic assignments to Moscow, Tanzania, Shanghai, Lisbon, and Georgetown, Guyana, ultimately concluding his professional journey with a special contractual assignment for the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Taipei, Taiwan.
Upon retiring from the public service, Doug fully devoted himself to his true passions: family life, golf, cooking, and his cherished role as "Poppa." Though his career spanned continents, Doug was first and foremost a family man. He was always happiest when surrounded by the warmth, laughter, and stories of his immediate and extended family.
He will be deeply loved and forever remembered by his wife, Shirley; his children, Estelle (Mike Nadon), Dale, Ross (Eileen), and Lisa; his eight grandchildren, Dwayne (Allie), Dennis (Mandy), Jeffrey, Ryan, Aaron, Justine, and Emma; and his four great-grandchildren, Felicity, Sam, Claire, and Renesmay. He will also be fondly missed by his sisters, Maureen, Colleen, and Audrey, along with many extended family members and friends worldwide.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Perth Memorial Hospital for their exceptional and compassionate care.
In keeping with Doug's wishes, there will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Doug's memory to the War Amps of Canada or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Arrangements are in the care of Blair & Son Funeral Directors, Smiths Falls.
