Obituary of David Charles Ernest Johnston

Surrounded by the love of his family, David Charles Ernest Johnston passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026, at the age of 76.

David will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose kindness, generosity, and devotion to others touched the lives of everyone who knew him. To know David was to love him. He treated everyone equally and was always willing to lend a helping hand. If he knew he could help someone, there was never a question—he was there. David quietly made life better for those around him. He never sought recognition for his efforts; helping others was simply part of who he was.

David is lovingly remembered by his wife, Kim Johnston (née Beckett); his sons, Craig (Molly) Johnston and Christopher Johnston; his stepchildren, Brian McKenna and Kerry (Terry Williams) McKenna; his cherished grandchildren, Raya and Nina McLean, Everley and Jack Johnston, and Beckett, Brady, and Ryann McKenna; and his siblings, Michael (Cheryl) Johnston, Patricia (Dan) Markovich, and Linda (Herman) Engel.

David began his career in the Psychology Department at the Rideau Regional Centre in Smiths Falls before pursuing his lifelong passion for golf. He later became a Certified Teaching Professional through the Canadian Golf Teachers Federation, sharing his knowledge and love of the game with golfers throughout the community.

Golf was one of David's greatest joys. He recorded four holes-in-one, won a Club Championship, shot his age on numerous occasions, and treasured every opportunity to be on the course. Many will fondly remember hearing him recount stories of golfing the historic Old Course at St. Andrews, an experience that remained one of the highlights of his life.

Another cherished chapter of David's life was travelling across Canada with Kim. Together, they journeyed from coast to coast, creating lasting memories and proudly dipping their feet in both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

Above all, David was devoted to his family and community. He will be remembered for his stories, his sense of humour, and the steady, dependable presence he brought to the lives of those around him. Those who knew him will miss him deeply and remember him often.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Smiths Falls Golf and Country Club.

In keeping with David's wishes, memorial donations may be made to the Junior Golf Program at the Smiths Falls Golf and Country Club.
