Peacefully surrounded by the love of her family at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute on Friday, September 4, 2026 at the age of 64.  Beloved wife of over of 39 years and best friend of Steve.  Much loved mother of Ashley Kerr (Taylor White).  Loved daughter of Alice (the late Edward) McIlvenna.  Sadly missed by her siblings Allen (Karen) McIlvenna, Ron (Shannon) McIlvenna, Peter (Lucie) McIlvenna, Suzanne (Mike) Jackman, Tim McIlvenna, Melody (Steve) Rochefort and predeceased by Eddie Jr. McIlvenna (survived by sister-in-law Donna).  Valerie will be fondly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and many good friends. 

Valerie found her greatest joy in her family and took immense pride in the love and memories they all shared. 

Valerie will be remembered most for her kind and generous heart, and for the love and care she so freely gave to everyone around her. She had a way of making people feel seen, valued, and loved, and her kindness touched so many lives.

If she could leave the world with one final reminder, it would be to give each other a little more grace. We never truly know what someone else may be carrying, and a little kindness can mean more than we realize. She would want us to lead with compassion, be gentle with one another, and always choose kindness.

Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at both the Heart Institute and the Smiths Falls Hospital Site for their care and compassion to Valerie and our family.  Most of all, thank you to Brenda, Mike and Taylor for being there to support us every step of the way.

A Celebration of Life will take place Saturday, October 17, 2026 at the Lombardy Hall from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.  In memory of Valerie, donations to the Ottawa Hospital Foundation (University of Ottawa Heart Institute) or the Perth & Smiths Falls Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.  Arrangements are in the care of Blair & Son Funeral Directors, Smiths Falls.
