One of my fondest memories of Dan is spending Sunday afternoons in our apartment at Dundas and Ossington playing chess, some tunes on the turntable. the sun streaming in the old latticed windows, Rotwang the spider keeping us company in his terrarium. Good days. I miss him.

A Legacy To Fulfill
"Fly high and away”

If we’re lucky each one of us will know someone we call the great guy. You know the guy – he says what he means, he follows through on what he says, he’s kind, he’s thoughtful, he’s interested in you. He’s fun to be around. And for good measure, the good lord has given him a sense of humour just so we can stand him.
We’re lucky if we know a great guy like that. He’s the kind of guy we want our sons to be friends with and we want our daughters to marry. Dan was a great guy. He was determined, hard working and he said what he meant and he followed through on things. And he had a great sense of humour.
Who among has not fallen victim to the "Dan I did not say I was crazy I said the weather outside was hazy”, and we all know about his determination. Who among us would order a truckload of logs to split? But he did. And he described it as " Chop a little, fall a little, get up ; chop a little, fall a little, get up”. But he chopped all that wood by hand because it was something that his family needed - wood - and he had time and he was determined that he was going to do that. Dan was a great guy. We have lost a great friend, a great family member, a great community member, a great musician.
And how are we who are left behind going to deal with that loss? What are we going to do? In the future there will moments we will consider Dan moments and he won’t be here to share them. How are we going to deal with that open space? How are we going to deal with that loss? Well, we are going to deal with it the way Dan would. When Dan’s hearing started to go, he just turned the volume up. When Dan’s balance started to go, he ordered another bunch of wood to cut. And when his eye sight started to go, Bev and he read together. Because Dan would have us live up to our potential. Just as our Lord and Saviour wants us to live up to our potential. Each one of us has been given gifts and talents and we are meant to share them regardless of the consequences. No excuses, no blame, no finger pointing. We are called to share the gifts God has given us without exception. Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ has given us the greatest gift of all - the gift of hope, of salvation, of life after now.
How much more should we who are able-bodied celebrate that gift? Because not only is that what the Lord would want us to do but it’s what Dan would want us to do. Dan would not want us to stand and mourn. Oh he doesn’t want us to forget about him, but he wants us to remember him with the delight, the sense of humour and joy of life that Dan used to tell stories about himself. And often he didn’t come out on the good end of (those stories) but that’s how he would want us to remember him. With joy and happiness and knowing that we had done our best ¬ - that we had shared what we had , that we were honourable people, and we had tried our best to do what was good for those around us. That’s the legacy that Dan leaves for us today. And it’s the legacy I ask you to pick up from him. Live life to your full potential. Live life in the hope of the resurrection that comes through the death and resurrection of our lord Jesus Christ. Live in hope.
I want to leave you with a few words of a favourite song the quartet used to sing. And it reminds me of how for Dan now the pain and suffering is over. Here are the words:

Some bright morning when this life is over, I’ll fly away
To a land on God’s celestial shore, I’ll fly away
When the shadows of this life have grown, I’ll fly away

When I die, Hallelujah by and by, I’ll fly away.
