I am writing to express my condolences to Doris's surviving family and to the memory of her family who passed before. I grew up in Perth, Ontario in the 1950's and 60's, leaving in 1965 to pursue my academic interests. But, I have to say, that Harry's Cafe was a major fixture in my youth. We would pile in there everyday after school, play jukebox records, drink sickly sweet cherry cokes, eat Chinese rolls, have chips and gravy, gossip and be silly as only teens can be. We did this all under the watchful eye of Doris, who in many ways, was like our den mother. Her sister Mary's presence was felt around town, with her caring ways. I remember the Soong's beautiful "modern" rancher on Drummond St, not far from the Tay. Years after I left, I would sometimes pop my head in the cafe door and say hello to Doris while I was home visiting my mom and dad. You must be so proud to see that the Soong building is on the register of Canada's Heritage Places. Your family left an indelible mark on Perth and on my life. She led a long contributory life. May she rest in peace. RF Vancouver, BC

Condolences to the Family of Doris Soong, Summer's end in the 60's always included supper at Harry's Cafe after a day at the Perth Fair. Many Saturday evenings were spent driving to Perth with my Dad or brother to pickup take-out from Harry's Cafe.
Respectfully, From The Cole Family

Doris will be remembered by many for her love of people and generosity of spirit. She was a dear friend and I will miss her. I would like to use this quotation I read a long time ago: "When we look up at night into the forever sky, we can feel that the ones we have lost are still with us..We never stop loving them and they are all around and inside us..loving us right back"
Rest in peace, Doris, I will cherish our memories. My deep sympathy and prayers to all her family Sincerely, Henriette Laporte

I left an original message and it disappeared from this site?
My sincere sympathy to all members of Doris' family and friends. Rest when you're weary and take time to grieve.
I would like to write this quotation that I received a short while ago: "When we look up at night into the forever sky, we can feel that the ones we have lost are still with us...We never stop loving them. And they are all around and inside of us...loving us right back.
She was a kind, considerate person who loved life, she was a good friend and I shall miss her. Sincerely, Henriette

I think that Rick Frizzell covered it well for most of us that enjoyed the warm reception, the great company and food and the kind watch of Howard and Doris, (and of course Mary) at Harry's Cafe. I too would stop in periodically in the after years when home visiting my family and would always be greeted with a great reception. I remember one year when I was just starting out in my career in Ottawa, Doris had slipped a parcel into our bag of food. It was Christmas time and she had enclosed a gift, with the quiet way and grace that Doris always carried. Some of our days in Harry's cafe bring back the best memories of my growing up in Perth. Thank you Doris.
