Dear Enid & Family,
I was so saddened when I got the news yesterday from John about the passing of our beloved Jack. Like others, I too felt great comfort from knowing he was surrounded by his friends, and with you, at the Legion, on this Remembrance Day, when he passed over. You know how I loved and admired Jack, and how he was always a special friend ever since our days at Rideau CC when he, John and I had our (always hilarious) Thursday lunches. I came to know Jack as one of the truest Gentleman I had ever met, and I was always so touched by manners, thoughtfulness and his grace. His love for you was a beautiful thing to see, and an inspiration for us all.
I'm so glad we shared that great time at Cranberry Lake this summer. I will miss him dearly, am grateful for all the dignity and joy he brought, and will never forget amazing Jack. It has been an honour to know him and have his friendship.
With love, and prayers for your comfort,
Moira

I am sorry for your loss of Jack. I first met him in 1965 when he was the RSM of the Lanark and Renfrew Scottish Regiment and I was a lowly Private recruit. Never remember him raising his voice to the soliders unless it was on the parade square. He was a well respected and trusted man in the Regiment.
I left the Regt in 1968 and returned in 1975 to serve another 22 years to retire as a Major. I often would run into Jack at Legion functions and was always pleased to see his smiling face and cheery attitude.
He will be missed.

I met Mr.Rabb through my husband Blake many years ago. Every November, Mr. Rabb would come to speak to my Kindergarten students. I loved looking at their little faces as this tall, elderly gentleman arrived into our classroom. They were in awe of him. Mr. Rabb took time to answer their questions ("When you were at war, did you miss your Mom?" "How did you get to that war?"). They couldn't keep their eyes off of his medals and he gently and patiently explained what each medal was for (over and over again :) One year, at the end of his visit, a tiny little girl raised her hand, paused and said, "I love you". Mr. Rabb looked at me and asked what she had said. I told him that she loves him. I bet you can imagine his big smile at that point.
Though these classroom visits are memorable, most important to me was the relationship that Mr. Rabb had with my own children Rebecca and Ben (whom he always called "Benjamin"). It was only a few weeks ago that Rebecca phoned Mr. Rabb to ask if he could come to her high school in Perth for their Remembrance Day assembly. He was unable to due to previous commitments at SF but Mr. Rabb phoned Rebecca several times to let her know that he was looking for another veteran for her. That certainly resonated with Rebecca.
Our son Ben has lost a friend and a hero. When Blake told Benjamin that Mr. Rabb had died, the first thing he did was take the photo of he and Jack on Remembrance Day several years ago and hold onto it. In 2010, Ben wrote a speech about heroes. The last line in that speech reads, " This community has some heroes of our own. Jack Rabb, Korean War, Jack Ranger, the forgotten war, Italy, Mr. Bert, 1st wave D-day."
God Bless you, Mr. Rabb. With much love and deep gratitude, Ann Seward

I was always proud and very blessed to call Jack a close friend and confidant. Enid and Jack have always been my second set of parents and have always been there for me. Jack was mischievous and fun but loyal and giving to all he knew. He was totally committed in his time and energy to his family, friends, the town of Smiths Falls, The Legion and Air Force Associations. To say he will be sorely missed is a vast understatement. He will certainly leave a huge gap in my own life which he was such a part of. Always a gentleman and bon vivant; they sure don't make em like that anymore!

Jack Rabb was simply the best! Smiths Falls has lost its finest soldier, a true supporter of every aspect of community life. From the time I arrived in Smiths Falls at the Record News, to Queen's Park and Parliament Hill and later the Smiths Falls Community Hospital Foundation, Jack Rabb (and Enid) was always the bright light on top of the lighthouse. I could always depend on Jack to provide great advice and to give me the enthusiasm to forge ahead with confidence. He and his colleagues saved the Royal Canadian Legion and when we needed a dialysis unit Jack led the charge up a very steep hill. Victory was ours and residents of the area have been the benefactors. Goodbye my friend! You will not be forgotten! Gerry Huddleston

Enid, Scott, Paul and your families: I was saddened more than you will ever know when Dad let me know of Jack's sudden passing; the blow was only softened when I learned that he was in his most natural element - at the Legion, so appropriately on Remembrance Day. Jack deserves credit for demonstrating to me, without fail, the values a man should carry throughout his life.

Enid and family - We were shocked to hear of Jack's passing. Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathy go out to the entire family. Jack is certainly going to be missed by all of his many, many friends both inside and outside of The Legion. He was a true friend and exceptional Legionnaire. If it were not for Jack, I no doubt would be where I am today with the Legion. He was my mentor and encouraged me and supported me in my quest to continue to keep moving on within the various ranks of the Legion. Enid, you and Jack and Barb and I shared many good times together. Times that we will cherish for a lifetime. May you also cherish all of your many great memories with Jack.

Jack was an exceptional man and an extremely dedicated Legion member who gave his guidance to many younger Legion officers such as myself. He will be deeply missed not only by the community but also the Legion community across the Province and beyond to all those who had met and befriended him. The Lord must have known that when Jack's time was to come that he would have wanted it to be at the Legion, his beloved second home, with you and his friends by his side. No words can express our sadness. Jack, who I always called "Mr. Rabb" from my childhood was a wonderful Friend to my Family, especially my late Father. A Gentleman
When you were speaking with Jack , you had his attention . I remember one of our many converations at a legion function . Jack and I were having a quick chat at the bar . Someone came up and wanted his opinion on something , he excused himself to me and then said to them , they would have to wait because he was talking with a lovely young lady ! He turned back to me and we finished our conversation . Jack could always make you feel as if what you were discussing with him was the most important thing to him . That in itself is a rariety today . But Jack was so much more then that and he left this world a better place with all that he did .Jack you will be missed . When toasting absent friends , you will come to mind .

Community member thanks you Mr.Rabb
As a child who went through the elementary school system in Smiths Falls in the 1970's I had the pleasure of hearing Mr.Rabb speak many times of his service and experiences in Korea. I was also lucky enough to be present when he spoke in a more private setting to our Scout groups. I was always the child hanging off of every word and asking dozens of questions. I remember admiring his chest full of medals and recognizing, even at a young age, that before me was and honourable and noble man.
Some 35 years later as a cub scout leader I called on Mr.Rabb to share his experiences with my pack, which of course he accepted with pleasure. I'm so very happy that my children had the opportunity to have the same influence in their lives as I did, even on his very last day with us.
Somehow I missed seeing Jack at the service Monday and wondered if his health allowed him to be there, I'm happy to hear he was. At the conclusion of the 2012 service I spotted him on Main St and made my way over to thank him again for his service. As I commented on the beautiful weather, the large turnout for the ceremony and how nice it was to see him there, we shook hands. His gloved left hand immediately covered the backside of my right - I swear I could feel the warmth straight from his heart. This was my last meeting with him and I know I will remember it for the rest of my days.
I don't have the pleasure of knowing the rest of the Rabb family, how very fortunate you all are to have had such a wonderful man as a husband, father and grandfather. Thank you for sharing your time with him with the community. We are all immeasurably better for it.
"To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high"
I can't think of anyone who lived these words more faithfully. The torch is safe, Sir. Thank you for your service, a job very well done. I will remember.

Our Neighbour Mr. Rabb
I remember Jack as a good neighbour, father to Scott and PJ, husband to Enid. He was the only Korean War veteran I knew personally and he wore the effects of that war with the hearing aids in his ears. He would wave us kids through to the back of his lot as we headed off with our bamboo poles to fish mudpout at dusk. He had a framing business in the basement of their house and I had many frames done by him. Very nice man.
