Alles Liebe, Eure Bettina

So sorry Berta, Ulrike, Chris and Carola to hear of your dear husband and father's passing. Would like to have visited the home to express my condolences, but full of the cold/flu. Krista said that there were plenty of neighbours and friends to show how George was so well respected and thought of. Just know that you are all in our thoughts daily.

Dear George,
I will never forget how much he likes to play cards. If he had a good hand, he was with his full body into the game hopefully to win!
And I always will remember how he could enjoy his dessert...and there was always "room" for it! We always spent a good time together. Thanks George!
Yours, Bettina Lindenstruth (Gersthofen,Germany)

Remembering Georg
REMEMBERING GEORG
I am remembering a gentle man--a kind, soft-spoken man who, to my knowledge, never spoke ill of anyone; nor have I heard anyone speak ill of him. He was a gentleman;unfailingly courteous, thoughtful, intelligent and solidly reliable. All this with a sense of humour too.
Jeff and I met the Lindenstruth family in 1973. We had just moved to the village of Ashton as had Georg, Berta and Ulrike,Chris and Carola.
Berta operated the store and post office while Georg worked at Wilde-Leitz in Ottawa and helped out with the store too. We've, over the years,
celebrated with them at Christmas, New Years, Easter and Thanksgiving.
Our most unique and longstanding tradition with Georg and the Lindenstruth family began in May of 1974 when we came up with the idea of having " Breakfast in the Forest” on the Sunday of the long weekend. We left Ashton early in the morning with two loaded vehicles, drove to Fitzroy Provincial and at 7 AM--yes 7 AM-- we set up camp stoves and all our cooking equipment and cooked a huge breakfast.
Thirty nine years later we continue this custom, the Sunday of every Victoria Day weekend. Many more families and friends join us; we plan to be there at 10 AM now instead of 7 AM. This change in time isn't because of any wimpishness on our part but because our families have to travel a bit longer to get there. We've breakfasted under various conditions -intense heat, snow flurries, all varieties of rain- from threatening to drizzle to torrential-and almost always, mosquitoes. It always turns out just right.
I could list the menu, with descriptions, but it would take several pages and ten minutes to relate. Suffice to say, our menu centres around bacon, sausages, ham, eggs, potatoes, pancakes and beans with every side dish you could imagine and some that might surprise you.
And then we have dessert.
Georg's love of desserts is legendary. But he did a pretty good job on the first courses too. We all envied his metabolism.
As all of our lives grew busier with work, farming, children, travel and hobbies it was an invaluable treat to know that we could count on a wonderful visit and feast with the Lindenstruths on Victoria day weekend.
Georg loved the outdoors. We've shared camping trips to their remote woodland property in Renfrew county and a winter vacation in a rustic log cabin where we skied in and hauled everything, including small children, on toboggans. In the fall of 1976, Georg and Jeff went on an epic moose hunting expedition to Northern Ontario. They camped, canoed the river and arrived home victorious, with a huge moose strapped to the Land Cruiser. Their second trip a few years later was also a wonderful time together--though that time they didn't come home with a moose.
Children were drawn to Georg, and he to them. Georg was known to our now grown children from babyhood and they always knew him as very welcoming, kind, gentle, interested in what they had to say. He had a well developed sense of humour and enjoyed listening to the banter and antics of young people around him. I love to remember how Georg's face glowed with pleasure in the company of his family and friends.
Georg is firmly in the fabric of our lives and will always be so, no matter where we are or what we are doing. We will always be aware of the great privilege of having known Georg Lindenstruth.

our first meeting
the first time we met Georg and Berta, we had bought a tractor and a friend of ours drove it to our newly acquired property. This was in 1984, and we didn't have a road yet, but you could drive a tractor with no problem. Georg and Berta also noticed our names on our mailbox, we weren't married yet and my maiden name was Keitel, which is German, so they were intrigued. They were a lifeline to country living. We would get water from them, or use their phone and learn what it is like to live in the country, we came from Ottawa. They invited some of our closed neighbours to meet us. We've spent a lot of time with them over the years, birthdays, Christmas, holidays, dinners and neighbourhood potlucks. The important things we learned from Georg was his quiet intelligence and Berta was how to be good neighbours and then become the best of friends.
Georg will be so missed
love Soraya, Henri and Melanie

first meeting
the first time we met Georg and Berta was when we moved onto our property (1984) We had just bought a tracker and were driving it down our road (which wasn't a road yet)and Berta noticed my last name (Keitel)on our mailbox (We weren't married yet) and knew it was a German name and wanted to meet us. We were living in a bus while we were building our house, we got water from them, used their phone and generally learned about our neighbours and living in the country. They even had a "neighbourhood" party for us so we could meet all the neighbours. We've been friends ever since. Since we were from Ottawa, there was a lot we had to learn, but the best lesson, was how to be good friends and neighbours, which we learned from Georg and Berta, and it has never been forgotten and never would. you'll be missed Georg, love Soraya, Henri and Melanie.
