Saddened to learn of Nick's passing. He was an inspiration to me and many others in Northumberland in our Green Party deliberations and will be missed. Nick wanted a better world. I hope we have the time to create one in his memory.

Always ready to help with a smile. Intelligent, erudite, a source of amazingly wide knowledge and ideas, but most importantly, a kind, generous and caring soul. We will miss him, and don't expect to see his like again. Godspeed, Nicky!

Cher Nicholas

Dear Cecilia
I was very sad to read of Nick's death. He was a wonderful man, so intelligent, so knowledgeable and so committed to so many good causes. He was also so much fun to be with. Both Dick and I admired him very much. I have such happy memories of the times he stayed with us when he and Dick were working together. I also remember a lovely visit with you both at your cottage. I regret very much that I will not be able to attend the funeral today. I am about to leave for Tanzania where I am very involved in some work in Longido District by a small NGO which takes up most of my time these days. (Project TEMBO)It would have been fun to talk to you and Nick about that!
I will be thinking about you and Nick as I begin my trip.
Affectionately
Maureen

You and I wished we could have been flies on the wall! Jane cherishes that time with Nicholas. Al and I treasure our memories of Nicholas and we wish you love and peace through this time of grieving ahead. Our sympathy, thoughts and best wishes are with you. Love, Ethelwyn and Al

Dear Cecilia and family, I was very saddened to learn of Nick's death. I had the opportunity to work with him on many projects during my career with IAPA. He was always someone I could rely upon to provide wise advice, creative ideas and a smile. He was always supportive and responsive when I had a need. Aside from his intelligence, experience and sensitivity he was a person of integrity, caring and loyalty. I missed him when he retired and called him on occasion to which he always responded with a smile. We also liked to talk history, a subject we both enjoyed. A rare gentleman. An honour to have known and worked with him. My thoughts are with you. Take good care, Warmest wishes, Maureen Shaw, Victoria, BC

Our heartfelt sympathies go out to you. We always enjoyed Nick’s surprise visits to our church from time to time when he was visiting the Lanark Highlands area. Our conversations were always enjoyable and Nick’s gentle nature and love for people always seemed front and center. His last visit was in September at the annual joint service between our Guthrie United Church and the good folks of St. George’s Anglican Church in Clayton. Great conversation at the refreshment time following. We will miss him with gratitude for having shared a little of life’s journey with him. In God’s loving care now and forever.

A Man for All Seasons
Nick was my main contact in the Ont Ministry of Labour when I worked in the Ont Cabinet office in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. Conscientious, thoughtful, kind, gentle, he was the ultimate public servant. In the late 1980's, after he returned from a trip to the Soviet Union, I was fortunate to have lunch with him to ask his impressions. He told me that political life was changing and that there would be repercussions. Though I was sceptical, within months the Soviet Union began to unravel, the Berlin Wall came down, and the rest is history. I always valued Nick's friendship and insight. My sincere condolences to his family.

Nicholas- the biggest heart out there.
Nicholas and I were business partners for many years. I think we drove each other crazy at times but our strong affection for one another allowed us to get through that. Nicholas was my mentor and teacher. His sage wisdom, his great mind, his wonderful way with people are things I'll always treasure about him. Wherever we went, people respected Nick. I always watched and listened, wondering what it was about him that drew people to him. It was the inherent kindness and generosity of spirit people could feel from him. His profound sense of fairness and his incredible listening skills.
One thing though- Nick could go off on the most incredible tangents. Fantastic but not when you're in a meeting with an impatient group of business executives. The running joke among our clients was that Nicholas provided the vision and the big ideas- Deborah was there with the proverbial hook to drag him back to earth and keep the meeting on track.
I will miss him so. His gentleness, his patience, generosity, kindness, deep thought, fun, and his no-nonsense, no drama approach to things. My heart breaks and I miss him already.
With great love and affection to Nicholas, Cecilia, Kolya and Natasha, grandchildren, extended family and friends
