"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns." (Psalm 46) David ... the journey was long, full of twists and turns ... the days spent seemed short and now so bittersweet ... till we meet again on the other side of the river, Requiescat in pace.

My deepest condolences to you Elaine, your children and family. I first met Dave as one of my professors in 1998 at Algonquin when I decided to return to school to realize a career change. Over the next 3 years I learned much from him and through the passion he displayed for his work. After graduation I was delighted when Dave called inviting me to teach a course, a role which I accepted with gratitude, enthusiasm and some trepidation. I vowed to do my very best to successfully meet the responsibility entrusted to me, I would not disappoint Dave. Now I would get to know Dave in a different role. He once again provided the guidance I needed to succeed with this opportunity. When Dave retired, I was sad to see him go, I would miss him, his happy smiles, hugs, interesting stories and words of encouragement… now he was off to a new career and it was my turn to offer him support.
I continue teaching to this day and have had several other rewarding opportunities at Algonquin thanks to Dave. I will remember him for the excellent teacher, colleague, friend and amazing person he was. Whenever I hear the word ‘phenomenal’ as I’m certain many others can relate, I think, and will continue to think of Dave.
Peace to you Dave.

I was deeply saddened to hear of David's passing. I such fond memories at Algonquin College of one of the most understanding and kind men I will ever know, always with a hug and an ear for everyone. As my mentor and later fellow teacher, I was forever challenged and inspired by him. I share a story with my current students of him demonstrating a birds-eye view by suddenly leaping onto a desk in one jump (perhaps a soccer skill), hovering over us with all the drama he possessed - our respect and fondness for him was cemented at that moment. He did know how to get and keep a student’s attention.
Not only did he have a heart of gold, (and looked like Robert Redford), his white robes along with his signature red & black MU illustrate what a completely colourful person he was.

Our sympathy to Elaine and the children
Many years ago, Drew and I went to every dance where David and his rock group played. He had such a stage presence and we loved to dance to his music. I also sang in the St. James Anglican church choir with David for several years. The first time he sang a solo, I had shivers up my back because it was so beautiful. We enjoyed David's dramatic talents as well. My favourite performance was when he played Nathan Detroit in "Guys & Dolls". He was hysterically funny and we couldn't believe that a local amateur theatre group could put on such a professional performance! Drew and I would have happily sat there at the end and watched it all over again. In 1991, David and I joined the RCIA group at St. John Roman Catholic Church and were received into the Catholic Church with the other members of the group at the Easter Vigil of 1992. When Drew was so very ill three years ago, David prayed for him, and that was such a comfort for us. David was so very talented in so many ways, but it is his kindness and innate "goodness" that we will miss most. What a terrible, terrible loss for everyone who has had the privilege of knowing this extraordinary man. Brenda Ethier & Drew McPherson

Road to Damascus
I was very privileged and honoured to have met and joined Elaine and David at St.John's rectory during Father ALS' reign. David at that time was working and taking the courses necessary tor his Deaconage. His energy for The Lord was always very powerful. He was always ready to welcome all and make each member a specialized cup of herbal tea. You have left an indelable mark on my life. God speed David.

Wonderfully made...
Intensely passionate, fiercely loyal, gentle, faithful, kind and compassionate, wonderfully whacky and just a little offbeat in such a good way. These are the words that come to mind as I think of David; a deep and committed wrestler and lover of God, a genuine friend, a fervent creator and visionary and an absolute nut about soccer. He touched our lives in so many ways and I am so grateful that our paths crossed on this beautiful earth.
David joyfully supported our children on the soccer field for years. As a Timbits coach I remember him doing his soccer night rounds at Conlon Farm and mischievously offering himself up, to the utter joy and delight of my pack of exuberant 5 year olds, as a target in a game of what he liked to call "Red-butt.” He opened the door of opportunity on the field to awkward teenage boys who had yet to figure out where their feet were on the ends of their rapidly growing legs. David walked beside them, encouraging and affirming their efforts and helping them hone their skills as players and members of a team and hone their character as human beings. With a twinkle in his eye and the unabashed joy of being alive and active, he demonstrated integrity, commitment and determination.
Perhaps, most precious of all was his connection with Gord: as co-conspirator and enabler of all things soccer-related - teams, trips, dreams, obsessions... as a loving and dedicated fellow father of a rambunctious brood... as a faithful friend and spiritual companion who spoke the same language, was vulnerable, unconditionally loving and supporting. I can imagine them laughing together right now in the presence of their Father.
Our community will miss him terribly but remember him fondly and celebrate his life. He truly was wonderfully made.
Thanks to all of his family, Elaine, David, Jonah, Joseph, Noah, Jacob, Claire and Janna for sharing him with us. My heart is with you, as are my prayers. May you find comfort in the arms of the Father and know that He walks with you.

A friend in song..
David, Carolyn, Joel and I sang together for 7 years. Among the laughing, sharing of life's ups and downs, and general comradry, we actually practised our music. We performed for every local function that would have us and even had a few paid gigs! Those years were very special for me. David's natural tenor voice, and instinctively playful performance style won the hearts of us and anyone who heard him. I can't imagine the world without him in it.
Love to Elaine and all of his family.

IRELAND EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS 2012
I was truly blessed to be present in Croake Park stadium in Ireland and heard Dave's magnificent voice ring out in proclamation of the Gospel "to the world" [LITERALLY] at the closing Mass of the 50th IEC in June, 2012. Upon hearing the news of Dave's passing, I immediately contacted Father Kevin Doran, Secretary General of the 50th IEC. Fr. Kevin has asked me to express his deepest sadness to the family. He will offer a Mass this coming week for Dave.

Dave the architect
Dave was recommended to us as the architect who might like a summer project remodelling the cottage. Little did I know when he took on our job that he was coaching, studying at St Pauls, on staff at Algonquin and of course, a family man. Every Friday he arrived at the lake in time to offer a beer to our contractor, chat with him, discuss the quirks of the job and together they would lay out the next week's work. Little details like the pattern in the dining area tiles were right up his alley. He also "stole" a large rock from the lane, a rock to be taken to John to carve and he and Elaine took time away from their family to arrive with a rock bowl filled with fruit as a Thanksgiving gift .
Dave was a rock, strong and multifaceted. And every trip to the lake we share the fruit of his labours.
It is with a great deal of sadness that we say goodbye.

Mr. Umbro
I would like to extend my sympathies to Elaine and family on behalf of his colleagues from the Architectural Technology - Technician Progam at Algonquin College and the numerous students who had the pleasure of benefiting from his knowledge and enthusiasm for teaching in subject areas that he had so much passion for. He was a pleasure to know and work with.

David Cavalier was my first "competitive" soccer coach, when I was 13. Before that I knew him as the tenor in my mom's a capella quartet, "The Latest Rumour." Before that I knew him as Frederic, the dashing young apprentice in The Pirates of Penzance. It wasn't until much later in life that I knew him as "Deacon Dave." What strikes me now is that all those versions of David were the same man: a creative, good-humoured, quietly competitive, generous-hearted man, a deeply spiritual man, one of the kindest I ever knew......We have lost a great soul...
