It absolutely breaks my heart to have to leave this message to Melanie and her family and loved ones. I remember Melanie from high school, she was the smart quiet girl who kept to herself but was quick to say hi if you said hi to her. I remember watching as her and Darius met each other and fell in love. I remember thinking what a sweet thing that these two found each other. I appreciate now later in life, that I got to experience that. How many of us can say we saw two people fall in love? Well I can. But it is with a sad heart that I am here today to share my condolences with you all. This is a terrible tragedy and we send love and prayers to Darus and Melanie's whole family, and pray that they are able to find some peace in God's love and knowing Melanie is with him. How do you say good-bye when you have barely began to say hello?
I was saddened to learn of this tragedy and the loss of such a wonderful person. Melanie was one of my students last term and was so excited and eager to pursue a career in nursing. She was enthusiastic and shared many stories about living in Perth, working at Lanark Lodge, travelling with her brother-in-law, and of course her cherished children.
She sat in the front of the class, a few rows back, usually on my right. I could count on her to answer questions and engage in class activities. Her passion for nursing was clear the day I met her. Her desire to be the best that she could be was evident. Her enthusiasm was contagious; she was my ideal student. Of the 300 students I had last term, I ‘knew’ ~35 of them. Melanie was one of those students who shared herself and made me feel privileged to be a part of her journey. Melanie asked me one day how I had followed my dreams while being a mom; I told her, "tell yourself every day ‘I CAN’ and remind your children/family ‘YOU CAN’, get through it day by day and never lose sight of your goals (nursing) and your priorities (children/family)”; she said "I can”. And we all know SHE COULD.
To you, her family and friends, Melanie was, and will continue to be, an inspiration to many student nurses; I wish I were addressing you upon her graduation, and not upon her death. I feel as though I speak for many of those in her HSS1101AW class-she will live on in our hearts and will never be forgotten.
So very sorry for your loss. Your pain is shared by many.
