I was shocked to learn of Irene"s passing. I had not seen her in quite awhile;but when we did see each other she always had a way of bringing sunshine in the room with her! She played at the Lodge a few times and it always cheered many people. John;I pray that you will find comfort in loving memories Irene left behind, and the many friends that you both shared.

Irene and John
I have loved hanging out with Irene and John over the years, from parties, sharing a table at the farmers market. I loved the way Irene took on learning. Over the years watching her with woodworking, and playing music. She was a life long learner.
John and Irene made me feel good about my own relationship.. by making space for each to have their own art form... and to support each other in their separate pursuits.
I am sorry to miss being there today John. I hope we will hang out at the Farmer's Market this summer.. and that I will find you back in the pottery studio again.
Much love,
Molly

The Ultimate Renaissance Woman
Reenie was the ultimate renaissance woman. Whatever she put her hand to she accomplished with the focus of an air plane controller; focused and determined to see it through with a finesse all her own. As everyone who worked with her knew, you did not interrupt Reenie when she was in "the zone".
Many know Of Irene's talent with wood. She was known for her sensitivity as a wood carver, carefully feeling the grain and allowing it to speak to her and her tools. Although the birds and wise men she crafted eventually found their way into the homes of family and friends and were always given with love, she was never quite satisfied with her creations. Even when invited to attend a meeting of the guild of master carvers in Ottawa, she doubted her ability, but those of us lucky enough to receive these wonderful gifts from her hands never doubted the talent she possessed.
Another talent Reenie was known for was sewing. Her sewing skills were that of an expert seamstress. Reenie could take an ordinary piece of cloth and with her extraordinary sense of colour and pattern, whip it into beautiful pillows and curtains to decorate their loving home, clothes to keep them warm and even the latest doggy runway fashion to ensure their beloved Spencer was the most fashionable puppie on the concession.
As a carpenter, Reenie collaborated with John on many renovations to their home, gazebo, pergola, "cottage”, and sugar shack, always working side by side but with the understanding that she was the lead carpenter. And she could be picky! She would think nothing of scaling a 20' ladder without looking down, determined to fix that one crooked nail, while John held the ladder with his eyes closed. Whether working with wood, leather, fabric or plumbing pipe, Reenie could always be counted on to turn other people's cast offs into works of great beauty. In fact, as John and all their friends at the recycling centre could attest, she invented the slogan "reduce, reuse and recycle".
Reenie's energy and penchant for hard work would often cause people to sit back and pant just watching her. One such occasion was when she succumbed to pond envy and took it upon herself to dig and construct a huge pond in the garden. Not content with just any old pond, she added her own creative touches, surrounding it with hand cast cement leaves, a fountain and carefully placed stones and glass. It soon became a home away from home for frogs and goldfish and is a sight to behold in summer. Along with the bird bath and beds of grasses and perennials, they created an Eden, always magically lit by candlelight during many happy nights of music shared with loved ones.
Ahhhh music. This is where Reenie truly was at home. Self taught, she was an accomplished tickler of the fiddle, piano, organ, guitar, banjo, dobro, mandolin, autoharp, harmonica, and last but not least, accordion. She could listen intently to a song and 10 minutes later be playing it note for note, always wanting to learn and share and never giving up until she had it. Her favourite language was music and she could stay up all night talking with the best of them, as many of her musical friends can attest. It was this love of music that attracted many to want to play with her. Whether you were good at an instrument or just beginning to play, she loved to encourage the conversation and you couldn't ask for a better teacher. She had a gift that many dream of and with her humble spirit, wasn't even aware that she had it. She just knew that she loved it.
This woman Irene, or Reenie to those who knew her well, was a loving, beautiful, determined, strong person, who devoted herself to all that she loved and touched all who she met. Her joie de vivre will be sorely missed but there's no doubt she's in a place where she's making music and we give thanks for having had her in our lives. Next stop Carnegie Hall, Reenie; we'll see you in our dreams.
