Contributions to the tribute of John James Cove

I just heard about John's death. I wanted to pay a tribute to his teaching and his contribution to carrying knowledge across generations and conveying it in ways that were both memorable and engaged. He was a model for teaching theory. I was both a student in John's lectures in the early 1980s and a colleague in the early 1990s before he retired. John represented my first encounter with sociological and anthropological theory - the Department's Soc-Anth 305 as it was then called and a bedrock for me as a wayward architecture students moving between a profession engaged with clients and academic social science. John was a veritable natural resource of knowledge, whether lecturing to students or working with West Coast groups. For the native groups he working with during his graduate studies and in later land claims cases, his research represented a unique cultural archive of hunting areas and traditional practices. As cultural memory it buttressed oral recollection and contributed to the revitalization of cultural patterns and a renaissance of confidence going forward. Please accept my condolences. I am so sad to hear that John has passed away. He was a real mentor for me and someone who embraced my crazy ideas both in my undergraduate studies and then as a graduate student. It was his openness which really pushed me to pursue a topic which I am still proud of to this day. We had a number of occasions to sound time together and he was the real thing and has left a legacy as a humble and modest anthropologist, teacher and friend!

I knew John as a graduate student and T.A. in the early 80s for his 305 undergrad theory course. There wasn't a year that went by in my own teaching career when I didn't reflect on his engaging style, exceptional memory and comprehensive examples I chose to emulate in so many courses. I credit John for inspiring my pursuit and the legacy he left for so many uncounted students.

A great mentor John directed my MA via the Department of Religion back when it existed at Carleton U, and he was a funny, thoughtful, and exacting taskmaster.  I had no idea at the time, that he had worked with and was friends with, the prof who would become my Ph.D director, Marie-Francoise Guedon from the U of Ottawa (they are/were both specialists on the Tsimshian peoples). At that time the Dept. used to host a dinner for all their graduate students, and as I was allowed to bring a friend, I invited Marie-Francoise, just to surprise John. The look on his face when he saw her (they hadn't seen each other in years) was priceless. (I got to spend most of my dinner with the other grads and John and Marie-Francoise caught up with great glee.) I'm gonna miss you bunches, John. Wine at lunch, laughter, and tips which I now pass onto my students every semester. Hope you get to spend enernity in one of those 'warm fishing cultures' you always wanted to visit permanently....
