A great mentor

John directed my MA via the Department of Religion back when it existed at Carleton U, and he was a funny, thoughtful, and exacting taskmaster. I had no idea at the time, that he had worked with and was friends with, the prof who would become my Ph.D director, Marie-Francoise Guedon from the U of Ottawa (they are/were both specialists on the Tsimshian peoples). At that time the Dept. used to host a dinner for all their graduate students, and as I was allowed to bring a friend, I invited Marie-Francoise, just to surprise John. The look on his face when he saw her (they hadn't seen each other in years) was priceless. (I got to spend most of my dinner with the other grads and John and Marie-Francoise caught up with great glee.)

I'm gonna miss you bunches, John. Wine at lunch, laughter, and tips which I now pass onto my students every semester. Hope you get to spend enernity in one of those 'warm fishing cultures' you always wanted to visit permanently....
