I loved Jean like a second Mom. My most vivid memories are hearing her laughter, and tasting her butter tarts! I never saw Jean in a bad mood, despite the four teenagers and their friends hanging around! I know she is in a better place now, and with her friends and famiy (my Mom included!).

We have so many fond childhood memories of Armstrong family gatherings - where we knew we would eat so well when Jean was in charge! And of course as kids - we always toed the line when Jean was around - she definitely taught us lots on proper behaviour!

Her no-nonsense outlook on life and her so witty sense of humour is what made Jean such a special lady. I can hear her deep laugh right now & it brings a smile to my face. My only regret is that our visits were so few & far between these last several years...

My Aunt Jean And Family

Aunt Jean was a very special and unique and loved lady. Growing up, my family spent a lot of time with Aunt Jean, Uncle Don and my five cousins. Summers at the cottage and Christmas dinners on the farm or at their home in Perth. They really were the Christmases that kids dream of. From Snowmobile rides outside, to great food, laughter and lots of kids running around have fun, it really was a wonderful time.

Aunt Jean was a loving and gracious hostess. Her baking was beyond belief. Her Butter Tarts would melt in your mouth. Her cooking was amazing. I thank her for all she did and brought to my childhood and my family. Even though she would not hesitiate to speak up, lol, it was always done with love and affection. I can still hear her laugh.

I remember my dad at the cottage trying to get a lure out of the weeds. He ended tipping over the boat and Jean's laugh just roared. Jean once came to visit in Ottawa. She tried to give my dad gas money and he refused to take it. Finally she said okay, and we dropped her off at her Bus. As the bus drove away, I found $20 she stashed under the seatbelt for gas money. She got her way. lol

We were lucky to have such a generous Aunt and Uncle who always welcomed us to their home, and their cottage. My cousins were amazing to grow up with. We were fortunate.

As I grew older, I did not see Aunt Jean and Uncle Don and my cousins, as much as I would have liked and I regret that terribly. Time sure has a way of getting away from us and not seeing the ones we love enough.

My sympathies and love to my cousins and their families. I thank you for all the great memories that your mom, dad and your family shared with us. They really are memories that last a lifetime. I miss those days.

Aunt Jean and Uncle Don are together again and I hope understand the love we have for them and how much we miss them. Aunt Jean was one of a kind and I was fortunate enough to have her as family. My sympathies, condolences and thoughts to all the family. We share your loss

Whadya say Mrs. A
That's usually the greeting I would give her as I walked in the door on North Street. Next to my own Mom she was my favourite Mom of all my friends when I lived in Perth. I was always able to elicit that deep belly laugh she was famous for. She was always willing to call me out for some transgression she believed I had made because Curt or Lori would always spill the beans. After myself and most everyone else moved away, I would drop in as I was passing through to have a coffee or a beer with her and was always welcome and share stories with her. Mrs. A was truly one of a kind. The world just lost another kind soul. You will be truly missed. Say hi to Dad for me.

A Tribute to a special lady
My Aunt Jean was a special lady to me.
I have many good memories that I will
treasure always. We had many summer
adventures at the cottage. She was the
best cook ever, chicken tetrazini was my
favorite. Her signature style were many
silver bangle bracelets that she always
wore. She had the best sense of humour,
if you were in her presence you were laughing.
These are just a few but the most
precious memory is the love she showed
to my family. She was always present
and supportive to whatever the circumstance.
The day we lost my Mom she was there along
with my Aunt Donna. She held me, comforted
me and helped me through the saddest
of all days. She had lost a sister too but her
heart was to be there for me. I will never
forget this special lady or the memories
she has given me. Please give Mom a
hug for me. Xo

Dear Patti

Dear Patti,

You should be very proud that you were your Mom's lifeline since your Dad died and that she was able to live in her own home as long as she did because of your selfless, daily efforts. Anytime I saw Jean she never failed to say that she did not know what she would do without you. I wish I could be there to give you a big hug.

We were a product of the 50's which meant that we hit our stride, or the wost possible age from a parent's perspective in the 60's. I think they say that if you can remember the 60's then you probably weren't there. We called her "Mean Jean," affectionately, of course, sort of. It has certainly been a term of endearment for a long time. Not sure how the moniker came about but probably something to do with her strongly held view, as with most mothers, that her children were not to blame for anything; if something untoward happened it must have been due to outside influences (i.e. Cathy Hansen or Cathy Burchell). Or maybe it was just as simple as "it rhymes" - don't forget teenagers are easily amused. In those early halcyon days, Jean reigned over a household of four girls and one boy with a typical 50's era husband who left all household and child management matters to the wife. I suspect that it is because of experiences suffered at the hands of four girls and one boy that Canadian family demographics changed and now the norm is one offspring or two for the very brave. Their first car was a Volkswagen beetle and all seven fit into it - obviously before the whole seat belt laws thing. Mind you if they had been in an accident, they could have served as airbags for one another it was such a tight fit. That Jean was able to maintain her mental faculties is a testament to her strong will and fortitude. Think about it - four of her little angels would have been teenagers at the same time and that time was the late 60's and 70's - can anyone think of a worse fate? I was there and would not wish it on anyone; don't kid yourself parental ignorance was bliss - just ask my Mom.

What do I remember about the Armstrong's. First and foremost, I remember the family members were, with the exception of Don, all loud, really, really loud. At the time, I put it down to the fact that they lived in a two-story house and we lived in a bungalow but I think there was more to it than that - like genetically-enhanced lung capacity. Lori was definitely "Queen of the Screamers" and could burst an eardrum at 20 paces; Donna had stealth and speed and could wield terror so God help anyone who touched her stuff; Curt was sometimes sullen but who could blame him what with living in the midst of the four sisters scenario; Patti was the petite demure one who used her "I am so sweet and innocent" strategy to get what she wanted - it worked at home and at school, even with Miss Miller; and Melanie - well she was the youngest and also had a mean set of lungs on her but once she grew out of the cute baby stage, she was kind of annoying so the best strategy was to just pawn her off on Lori. Sorry Lori but like they say, stuff happens.

Jean did her family proud and was very proud of her family. At the end of the day, what more does one need or hope for? My deepest sympathy to all the Armstrong's and may wonderful memories of your often chaotic, mostly fun and always action-packed up-bringing remain with you forever. Your sadness now is a reality but remember the laughter.

Aunt Jean
I will forever remember as a kid, visiting Uncle Don and Aunt Jeans cottage every summer. This will always be one on the greatest memories of my childhood. Don and Jean would always bustle around making sure everyone was taken care of, and the cottage would be full of laughter from family and friends. The funniest moment was when my brother Chris and I think my cousin Rick had been fishing and one of them had caught a large fish. As the brought the boat near the dock, a large group of family members went out onto the dock to see, suddenly the dock collapsed sending everyone into the lake. We all laughed for years remembering that time. Aunt Jean will forever remain in my thoughts and in my heart for the truly unique and special lady she was. With love till we meet again.
