My sincere sympathy to Jim and to Evelyn's family. I feel privileged that I got to know Jim and Evelyn Sands. What a special couple. I love the story about when Jim married Evelyn when they were 5 years old. Evelyn wore a lace curtain for her veil. Then they went to her bedroom and closed the door! There was never a closed door when anyone went to visit this gracious pair. My life is richer for getting to know Evelyn, a beautiful lady inside and out.
Sincerely

Warm loving memories
The excitement that I felt when we heard "The Sands" were coming up to the cottage for the weekend. Even before they bought their own cottage in The Bay, they were a loving and fun part of the community. I remember the eukalalie playing, fire works on long weekends, and The Sands joining in and most often leading in the fun times. Evelyn (Mrs. Sands then) was such a lovely person. Always warm and welcoming, yet always prepared to dole out a deserved "life lesson" to a sometimes precocious toddler and later teenager! Never giving offence. A true lady! She is lovingly remembered.

My Second Mom

I have known Ev Sands all my life. She and Jim were close friends with my Mom and Dad since I was knee high to a grasshopper in the early 50's. I remember lots of visits in Agincourt, then at our cottage and then as a cottage neighbour.

As a kid, I couldn't figure out how she had such a long finger--a finger that was always giving me a gentle poke in the ribs to smarten me up. As a young man, she seemed to know how it was going with me and my own kids even before I did. As time went on, another friendly chat with Ev was a guaranteed high point of the day.

She was my second Mom and a truly lovely lady. Sadly missed, but forever a part of my life.

a warm welcome

My grandparents owned the cottage two doors down from Jim and Ev and growing up spending summers on Kennisis Lake, I was fortunate to befriend Rayna and Joel and the whole wonderful Sands family. Typically within an hour or so of arriving at the cottage my brother and I would head two doors over to see if there was anyone around to play with. As often as not (and more often than not as we got older), our time at the cottage didn't overlap with Rayna and Joel's, but we always knew we would receive a warm welcome from Ev (and Jim of course) nonetheless. Despite there being nearly 60 years between us, I can't remember a time when I knocked on their door and didn't end up coming in for cookies and a drink and a very pleasant chat. I certainly wasn't just "the elderly" that Ev was able to put as ease with her warm smile and hospitality. From before the age of ten and every time since then that I have visited Ev and Jim they always have made me feel like a valued and special guest in their home; and when, later in life, I showed up to visit accompanied by my wife and children, that same geniune warmth and love was immediately extended to them as well. Ev was the type of person who made you feel good about yourself every time you walked in her door; and in a way that stayed with you long after you had left. I am blessed to have known such a dear soul and join all those who knew her in mourning her passing, while celebrating her wonderful life.
