I was proud to have been able to teach with Andy at Ridgemont High School. He had the rare combination of a great sense of humour and dedication to his work. When I had an occasional success he reminded me not to get to full of myself and when things did not go as planned he was there to offer a measure of good cheer. Students and colleagues alike will miss him always.

As a Stinson Avenue kiddo, we all swarmed the streets with every grown-up watching over us. I always remember Mr. Monteith stopping his work on the lawns and gardens to always greet us with a hige grin and a waive. Sorry for your loss, Monteith clan.

favourite teacher

So sorry to hear of Mr. Monteith's passing. He was my favourite teacher at Ridgemont High school from 1962 to 1966. He was more than a teacher- he was an educator. He would regail the class (all males in those days) with stories from his youth about "tickling" fish in brooks in Scotland and "draughting" behind trucks on his bicycle. These stories would take up about half the period before he got into the lesson. He rapped my knuckles with a birch stick on at least one occassion but I always respected and liked him.

Thank you Mr. Monteith for teaching me more than drafting.

Educator Always

I worked with Andy for 28 years at Ridgemont High School. During those years we became good friends who helped one another with projects around our homes as well as supporting one another at work. Only last week in a telephone conversation, Andy thanked me for always purchasing materials for the school library that supported his classroom program.

Being in his company was a time for jokes and laughter but he always took the opportunity to teach. I only bicycled with him once but during that one ride, he taught me the correct riding technique where the torso never moves- only the legs move up and down. Even today whenever the sun casts my shadow on the ground in front of me, I remember Andy's advice and look to see if my upper body is swaying. He did the same with my cross-country ski technique.

When Andy moved to Perth, Mildred & I tried to time our travel through that town to meet Andy for lunch or just a coffee at Tim's. It was always a good time with plenty of laughs. We are going to miss him.
