John, it is with profound sadness I heard of Steven's recent passing. Desmond Tutu once said, "Hope is being able to see the light despite all of the darkness." I wish you and all your family comfort and hope in the days, weeks and months ahead. I will fondly remember times of laughter and good-naturwd teasing with you and Steven.

Dear Emily, Dylan, Lan and Steve's family,
I cannot begin to fathom the sense of loss, void and hurt you are feeling. I know of no words to comfort; I share with you a few simple words on what I so appreciated in my classmate, Steve.
It was my privilege to study with Steve and experience firsthand of his terrific sense of fun, joy, intelligence and definitely, his gift for connecting with people in meaningful, down-to-earth, charming ways.
Steve was such an integral part of our Queen's Education class of '99. I think everyone in our graduating class had a connection with Steve because he sought to know each of us. His laughter resounded in our residence corridors; his mischievous sense of play tickled us (especially during the classes on theory); his knack for whipping up the most interesting and loveliest of sketches on bits of paper or napkins; his appreciation for good foods; his ability to befriend anyone and everyone; his candid honesty (I had some hideous knitted sweaters back in the days and Steve kindly exchanged barbs with me). I knew Steve to be full of vibrance, kindness and curiosity. Us being both from the Ottawa valley at a time when diversity was not the norm, I especially appreciated how confident and proud Steve was to be Chinese: he prattled to me of little Chinese couplets during the Moon Festival and when so few attempted to say my name properly, I was impressed to hear my name correctly pronounced in a poetic Chinese accent by Steve. He tried to teach me how to write a few characters but alas, the strokes and lines did not stick to me well. Thankfully, Steve also was in my 'Computers and Multimedia Specialization' course, which helped me out greatly, as he was coding and creating amazing artistic presentations with ease while I gingerly wrestled with making a boringly simple 'Kidpix' stack. What I remembered most about Steve from our teacher college days was how much Steve respected and loved his family, and of what a tremendous loyal and playful friend he was to so many.
I know that I was but one of many whom Steve befriended, helped and influenced at Queen's that year.
It is my sincerest wish that Steve's children, wife, family, circle of friends and teaching community may find solace in the everyday and extraordinary memories that you each personally hold of Steve, and of his boundless generosity and capacity for love.
Heartfelt condolences,
My-Linh (May Ling) - Queen's Teacher Education Class of 1999

Dear LAN,
My condolences to you and your family during this difficult time. I was very fortunate to meet Steve through Joyce years ago. I still remember that time when Steve was smiling and showing off his wonderful artwork to us. We will all miss Steve very much but we know he is in a better place in heaven right now. Please take care of yourself and your kids.

Dear Leung Family,
Steve was a friend of mine in middle school and high school. Although we lost touch after graduating I often thought about Steve. I hope that sharing a few words and memories about Steve will bring you a smile in your time of grief, as he so often was able to make me smile and laugh.
I was not surprised to hear that Steve had become a teacher. His joyful and caring nature I am sure served him well in his field of work. His students must have adored him. My memories of Steve make me smile; I remember our phone conversations as kids, mischief in Mr. Kinch’s grade 8 class, or especially the time he took me as his guest to a family wedding in Ottawa. (I was an excited, nervous, naive small town girl going to a traditional Chinese wedding in the big city!) He invited me into his family and proudly taught me about his culture. What I remember most is his smile though.
My wish is that Steve’s family can find comfort in knowing that he was an extraordinary person who brought a positive energy and influence to so many people in this world - especially through his smile.
My Condolences,
Jodi Anderson (Wanless) - High School Classmate - Class of 1993

When Steven first moved to Canada with his brother John, it was wonderful to have playmates at the age of 10. We played ball, tag and Steven taught me to ride a bike. We spent hours in the medical centre parking lot going in circles and he was both patient and kind. He was also a talented artist. My parents have a framed piece that he created for them when he was still in high school. His smile and great sense of humor will not be forgotten. We are truly sad to hear of a life extinguished too soon. May your family find comfort in the memories that you shared.

Dear Leung Family,
I am sending my deepest condolences to the entire Leung family. I knew Steven as Mr. Leung, when I was a student in his grade 6 art class at Sir John A. MacDonald Middle School. Even though I was a student in his class 11 years ago, I remember him to this day and I know I will always remember him. He made me love art and produce art that I was able to be proud of. As a current student at OISE obtaining my masters, his class is one I often reflect back on and talk about with my colleagues when discussing classes and teachers that had an impact on us and created a classroom environment that we could look forward to. He was by far one of my favourite elementary school teachers. My fondest memory of him was when he took the time to go around and sketch a portrait of every one of his students on our art portfolios. I remember the excitement everyone expressed when it was finally their turn to be drawn. Mr. Leung made us feel like rockstars in his class. It is truly a devastating loss and I am truly saddened by it. I am grateful I was able to have him as a teacher and will take my memories of him with me as I continue my path to become a teacher that inspires students as much as he did.

To the Leung Family, I offer my sincerest condolences to you. As a student of his from over 7 years ago, I knew him as the greatest role model and found him as a personal inspiration. Without his helping hand I might never have found the path I follow today. He was ever so caring and attentive years ago and I am certain that he still watches from the heavens as we continue to walk the path of our lives. Take care, he will be greatly missed but never forgotten.

Dear Lan, Emily and Dylan:
Steve was an amazing person with the best smile and a great sense of humour. I have many memories of him starting from our days at Queens, throughout our teaching careers and of our mutual love of photography. Most of these memories revolve around good food, great wine and camera lenses. He was one of my best friends and I had a lot of respect for his integrity, his kindness and his sense of family.
There are no words to describe your loss, but Lan, it needs to be said: you have been amazing throughout his illness. He could not have received better care than the care you provided him - he knew it, too. Emily and Dylan, he loved you two so much. When I recently went through his hard drive for the slideshow, the number of photos he had of you was indicative of that.
You guys are family to me, and if there is anything you need, don't hesitate to ask.
My deepest condolences,
Joyce

High School Art
<p>
Steve and I were good friends in school, back in the late 1980's. We attended Chimo and SFDCI together, when neither of us were old enough to drive a car. We had our grade 9 art class at 1 pm, immediately after lunch. With our preference to spend our lunches at Durants, we often arrived a few minutes late. Thankfully, we had a forgiving art teacher.</p>
<p>
When it came to our art projects, be it drawing or painting, Steve was a talent. He put the rest of us to shame. The only person I met who could go toe to toe with Steve was his older brother John (I once left my school picture in his kitchen - John did a reproduction (I think it was in pastels) that was embarassingly good).</p>
<p>
Despite Steve's far reaching skills in art, never did he demonstrate any superiority complex on the rest of us. He was always funny, bright, and absolutely willing to share insight. My crowning jewel of this class was a snow leopard in charcoal. It was the best that I was capable of. Steve threw something together the night before (actually, I think it was late), which was a hawk in mid flight that was two orders of magnitude above my work and the rest of the class. He was so nonchalant about it too, shrugging it off as just another drawing he did, while the rest of the class stared at the magnificance of what he handed in.</p>
<p>
As happens to many childhood friendships, I moved away and he and I fell out of touch. We did touch base again - sometime in the late 90's. He was teaching by this time, and I was absolutely pleased to hear he was still engaged in art. In the last 20 years, I thought of him often. I wanted to reach out at some point to reconnect. Sadly, this task will forever sit in my "never got around to it" pile.</p>
<p>
Unfortunately, my mother passed on this terrible news of Steve's passing. I never knew he was sick. I never knew he got married or became a father. We knew each other as friends between Grades 7-9, and that was a long time ago. As I sit here in my den, I am typing with tears in my eyes because I remember a wonderful time, and a simpler time, when we were good friends, seeing each other every day at school. When the challenges in life were beating Shinobi or Rygar on one quarter, making fun of our basketball coach without him knowing, or rushing to get to art class on time - it was always so easy and so much fun for us.</p>
<p>
Rest in peace, my old friend. </p>
<p>
My condolences to his family and friends.</p>
