Dinner at the Farm
Norma and my father have been "significant others" for a couple of years and it was a relationship that made them both so happy. We could see it in their faces when Norma was visiting and also on my dad's when he talked about her. They made a great couple.
For the longest time now, they kept saying "... we should visit the farm." Well, we did recently and we had a great time.
My family and I are city folk so it was quite a thrill when Norma hopped on her tractor, hooked up the wagon, and gave us a wagon ride around the property. She took pride is pointing out that darn tree that her tractor got stuck on the week before. The tree that was now lying on the ground defeated by her saw.
Norma was glad we came, especially as we had a van-load of Carl's belongings, things he needed to store in preparation for his upcoming move. Having some of his things there would give him more "encouragement" to visit. We also chuckled at the various changes she made since meeting him. Getting Internet, WiFi, and cable - all the things necessary to make his stay happier - and longer.
For dinner she made a delicious roast complete with homemade beans and two pies. The beans were so good that now my wife wants to make some. And the pies, well let's just say that there were not a lot of leftovers. She laughed when she saw me enjoying her favorite chair complete with shawl (it was a bit chilly). She even showed me the trick for getting the foot stool up.
It was a great way to spend the day and we returned home in good spirits. Unfortunately, it was the next day when she had the stroke. I would like to think that we helped bring some happiness into her life by merely being a part of hers. We will miss her.
Derrick Guilmette.
