I'm am very saddened to learn of Mr. Clarke's death. He was my grade 8 teacher and Principal many years ago.
He was 'the' best! He exemplified sound leadership, integrity and excellence but most importantly, compassion and kindness towards his students and school community.
That 'smile' spoke volumes of who he was.
You were my fav... (probably) :)

Looking Back
Looking back, many of us will always remember that special place-a 'spot' in a school where, I guess, the word 'spotlight' deems just that-a place where one just shines. For many, it could be the gym. For others a music room, a library, a stage. And...for others...the classroom.
One of the spots that I remember the most was, not for me, but for my students. This place was on the top floor of St. Francis School in the Science Lab, with their teacher, Mr. Clarke.
The kids sat in reverential awe as Mr. Clarke would demonstrate the many types of equipment, previewing the exciting experiments they would be testing, and the kids listened to every scientific word Gene would say as if it were Gospel. A true atmosphere of learning.
On the other hand, the flip side to this 'top-floor' Heaven was the 'bottom-floor' classroom that Gene invited the teachers and students to experience...the early Computer Lab.
I remember looking...not as excited as Gene, as I sat in front of a machine as big as my Living Room TV set. I can still hear Gene encouraging me to roll the cursor ball to make it move across the screen. Hmm-funny it was called a cursor. So appropriate-me sweating so much my hand kept slipping off the ball and me 'cursoring' it under my breath.
Scared as I was of this new fangled technology, Gene was cool, calm, and so-ever enthusiastic to share with teachers and students alike a whole new world of Science.
Thanks, Gene, for always looking ahead, and broadening our horizons. You will be missed.
Madelyn
