From Granddaughter Laura

My Gramps was my First-Dibs Lunch Date for many years. A number of friends would be familiar with the response, “No, I can’t, I’m having lunch with my Gramps!” when they called asking for my plans for the afternoon. If he came to my house, he’d always be prepared with dessert: a pair of bananas and some chocolate milk. If we went to town, we’d inevitably run errands while we were out, and sometimes those errands were simply keeping tabs on the many friendly faces he found at the barber or outside the laundromat.

What sticks out most in my memory about those dates was knowing, beyond a doubt, that he was proud of me. He introduced me to the servers at the restaurant or to old friends the same way every time. “This is Laura McLean. She teaches over in Kazakhstan. She’s home for the summer, and she’s my granddaughter.”
Anyone else in the world would introduce me as their relation first. “This is my friend,” or “this is my neice” or “this is my colleague.” But he always introduced me by my name first, as though the person he was introducing me to should have heard of me by now. I always remember feeling a little embarrassed by it all, but pride shone from his bright blue eyes whenever he spoke.
I believe pride was who he was, down to his core. He was proud of the family he built. He was proud of the farm he tended. He was proud of the changes he made in his community.
Sometimes that pride made him an incredibly stubborn and unshakable force to be reckoned with... But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love that about him too. People who met him and heard how old he was were always surprised; he was a tower of a man who walked upright, shoulders back, and met your eyes unabashedly whenever he spoke. He never suffered fools gladly, and his booming voice commanded respect all the way through his 90’s.
I feel very grateful that I got to share some of my own family pride with my Gramps before he passed. He was not going to miss out on giving his seal of approval on my future husband. Even if it meant the two of us being late to the airport, I knew I’d be in trouble if I didn’t give him the opportunity to be one of the first to lay eyes on Eugene in person. He decided he was a fine young man some time after he found out he was another "Mc". A couple of years later, I got to introduce him to my son. Gramps shared his cane and chuckled when Liam whacked him in the knees with it. His eyes twinkled as he told me I was “going to need a pair of roller skates to keep up with that boy.” And finally, about a week ago, I was able to call him and let him know that he had another great grandson. He congratulated me, but kept our phone conversation typically short and sweet.

I know he would have liked to meet Graeme. Lord knows I would have loved Graeme to meet the man that meant so much to me. But he will, I suppose, through the stories I share about him. I’ll tell him, “He was John McLean. He had a large family who loved him dearly. He had a gruff voice and soft heart. He was the best company you could ask for on a lunch date, and he was my grandfather.”
