Dear Carters,
I am so very sorry that Brenda has died. I feel sure that she would want us to remember her amazing life, and how much she loved her family, rather than focusing only on our own feelings of loss and grief. Let us hope that as time passes, the grief will subside and fond memories of Brenda will become happier ones for all of you.
If there is anything at all that I can do for you, or help you with, at this difficult time, please let me know.
I send you our most heartfelt condolences - from Malcolm, Duncan and me.
with much love,
Tory

My sincere condolences to Gerard and to Brenda's family in the US and Ireland.
Gerard: Even though we have not met, Brenda was my Mother's grand niece on Doris's side. I know that Brenda spent some time on my parents farm in the Eastern Townships of Quebec when she was young. I believe she especially enjoyed the horses! More recentley in the late 1980's Brenda made a special visit to NS to see my Mother. It was a lovely visit, so appreciated by my Mother especially. A very timely visit as well as Mom passed away shortly after. I still have several original drawings by Brenda who sent them to Mom in the early stages of her illustrious career. Please accept my sincere sympathy. Although gone from this earth, her presence and legacy will live on. Sincerely, Heather MacIntosh Lonergan and family, Berwick, NS

I have only fond memories of Brenda. I was a homemaker for WeCare for Tom Manning when Brenda was his assistant. She had a lot of faith in me, and my work. I remember how she gave me free rein in planning menus, looking after Tom and organizing their home. It was so great to work with her. She was a no nonsense kind of person who had a great love for life. I was so sorry to hear she had been ill and especially that she died of a brain tumor. My first husband Abraham De Jong had a brain tumor too so I know what that is like. I was glad to hear Brenda kept going, writing books, etc. She gave me a little print when I left and moved to BC and I cherish it. She was a very interesting person. Not to be forgotten!! My condolences!

I was so sorry to hear only recently of Brenda's death. I met her in the early 1970s at the University of Connecticut, and we were close friends for many years, corresponding frequently and visiting back and forth between Merrickville and northeastern Connecticut. I have a wonderful collection of letters, notes, cards, and sketches, as well as several beautiful paintings and prints, that Brenda sent to me over two decades. We lost touch around 1990, and I so very much regret not keeping up what was a highly valued friendship with a remarkably kind, funny and passionate woman. This is a belated expression of sympathy, I know, but I extend my deepest condolences to her family and very large circle of friends.

just a thought~

Dear Brenda, I didn't know you, your life, your work or your family. Your painting, Antlers, hung on my parents' living room wall since I was a child. My dad always said it was "worth a lot of money" , I don't know if that's true, but I think it just meant it was worth a lot to him. Both of my parents have recently passed, and now the painting belongs to me. My dad was also an artist who typically chose canadian birds and animals as his subjects. It is my hope that maybe, somehow, someway, something else, something more occurs after this life. I just wanted to let you know that your work touched him, and watched over my family for so many years.

North of Here

North of Here

Orion is high now, and
I am leaving.
When the moon falls below the treeline,
I will go north.

She will spend the summer north of here:
traling the polar bears
recording the young lives of Arctic birds.

They are waiting for me.

I said nothing, but kissed her hair and desired

To be a polar bear:
Lifting my heavy head to catch the scent of her
(to track her across the summer tundra
and winter pack ice)

And follow, wondering.

In August, a letter:

Bathurst Island is good.
People in the villages remember me from last year, and the
weather is mild. It was 55 on a calm day so I went swimming.

Many polar bears are here.

An Arctic fox hunted for two days near camp.

(There was a sketch of a fledgling tern
and a ptarmigan next to love.)

One night before she left, we ate a rabbit
felled by an unknown motorist
on a warm and lonely Connecticut highway.

She ruffled the fur, examined the hide,
and brought it home for dinner.

It was a female, and she showed me
the small, undeveloped ovaries as we cleaned it.

Once, a live pheasant came home with her:
another present for the larder.

Do you know how the Eskimos kill a bird?
Like this, she said, and

(Do it swiftly, save a bullet, don't look for an axe)

crushed its skull neatly between her teeth.

In the cold north, there is so much more to see:
the thousand colors of snow
the cloistered life of the burrowing owl
musk oxen among the lichens

And the silent curious bear, swaying and padding behind.

I'll think of you in one way or another almost each and every day. Your uniqueness and flair so sorely missed. The life you lived fearlessly; your supernova's bright arch dimmed the star filled sky! That was you Brenda Carter, my gentle dearest. Of necessity I now go onward without you. As you deeply wished I would. Our love is cherished always in my heart, and that I know shall never die.
