Away back when...

This goes back to around 1954 when Phyllis was at Kemptville High school. I hardly knew her, being a couple of years ahead of her in school but this incident came back to me when my three O'Neill cousins drew my attention to her obituary.

I think I was in about grade 12 and lived about a mile outside the town. I'd walked into town on a Saturday night in the winter to go skating at the local skating rink. I was walking home after skating and had just got onto the road heading out of town. I had my skated hanging around my neck. It was snowing and icy and my feet went out from under me and I fell. One of my skates hit my face near my eye and it hurt but it was so cold that I didn't feel it much. I got up and started walking when a car pulled up beside me and stopped.

It was Phyllis and Teddy Holmes, a guy in the school who Phyllis was dating and Phyllis opened her window and asked if I wanted a drive . I assume that Teddy was taking Phyllis home as she lived just up the same road and at the edge of town.

Anyway, I guess the lights went on in the car and Phyllis let out a shriek and pointed at me. My face was covered in blood.

They drove me home and my aunt, a nurse, cleaned me up and applied a bandage. It wasn't as bad as it looked. It was the talk of the school the next week for all of five minutes.

This is a very minor story but Phyllis's family might get some enjoyment hearing something about her youth.
