Obituary of James Robert Gilpin

Gilpin, James Robert Veteran of WWII June 8, 1925 - September 23, 2010 It is with great sadness that the family of Jim Gilpin announces his passing after a courageous battle with cancer. Loving husband and best friend for over 63 years to Elva (nee Ennis). Proud father of Bob (Kathy), Tom (Jean Anne) and Jane (Dave Jackson). Loving grandfather of Krista, Kara, Adam (Crystal), Kate (Glen Green), Jeff, Marci Jackson, Pam (Josh Phillips) and James Jackson. Dear brother of Joyce (Dwight McLaughlin). He will be fondly remembered by nieces, nephews, cousins, good neighbours and many friends. Jim was born in Brockville, Ontario where he attended public and high school. In 1942 he joined the air force and was posted to Norfolk, England on Halifax heavy bombers. In 1946 he was discharged and returned to Canada to marry his sweetheart who was waiting for him. Following graduation from the University of Toronto, he joined the Defence Research Board in Ottawa as a research chemist assigned to the Royal Canadian Navy. In 1967 he retired from the government to join his wife in managing the Perth Plaza Motel. He was a devoted member of the Masonic Lodge for over 60 years serving in many offices and was elected Senior Warden - Grand Lodge. He was a Shrine member. During his twenty years as a member of the Perth Rotary Club he served as Chairman of the Fundraising Committee for the Perth Indoor Swimming Pool. He served as trustee on the Perth Public School Board and was past president of the Perth Curling Club and was appointed by the Ontario Government to the Lanark County Housing Authority. Jim was a faithful and devoted member of St. James Anglican Church, Perth. Friends may pay their respects at the Blair & Son Funeral Home, 15 Gore St. W Perth on Monday, September 27th, 2010 from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 P.M. Funeral service will be held in St. James Anglican Church on Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. followed by a reception in the church hall. Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 244 Perth will hold a Veteran's Service of Remembrance on Monday at 6:15 P.M. A Masonic Memorial Service will be held Monday at 8 P.M. In remembrance, contributions to the Great War Memorial Hospital Foundation or St. James Anglican Church would be appreciated. The Gilpin family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the compassionate care of the Perth Hospital, the nurses in Palliative Care and Dr. Paul Turner and to Dr. Rheaume, Dr. Eapon and the Ottawa Cancer Centre.
