Libby and family I am sorry to hear about Arnie passing away. I did not get Ross's email until Monday am which was too late to come to the funeral. Arnie will always be a very very special person in my heart. Arnie was always kind to me. I have shared a lot of good memories with Arnie and as well with you Libby. My the adventure with Arnie was our last our sailing trip from Windsor to Parry Sound. Arnie wasa real trouper on the sailing trips. Arnie will always be remembered by me for his kindness, warmth, laughter, sense of humour, the very very long snowmobile rides, the long walk in snow up to my waste into canoe lake on one of our snow mobile trip, his dry sense of humour, the pins in his skidoo suit and the new suit he was so proud of the last year Ross and I snow mobiled with him. Arnie lived life to the fullest. I never heard Arnie say a bad word about anyone and he was always so positive and searching for adventure. Arnie is a role model. Arnie will be missed by all my thoughts are with you Libby and family. Susan Andrews

A true friend ... Arnie Stanzel
I met Arnie when my X Wife Gail and I along with our two daughters Dawn & Lesley moved into the house next to the Stanzels on Parthia Ave. in Ottawa, this was in the early 70’s. We arrived with a canoe strapped to the roof of our car, a big black dog named Buster, and other paraphernalia. Arnie told me later that he immediately said to Lib .... "final some real people have moved into the neighbourhood” by this I think he meant .... outdoors kinda folks. Our families quickly become friends including the big black dog Buster who adopted the Stanzels as his second family.
Over the years we have shared many a happy time both as a family and Arnie and I as close friends.
It would take a complete book to relate all of the stories of our exploits and for some of you reading this there will some "you had to be there moments”.
One of the early memories I have of Arnie is of him running up the launch ramp legs flailing while wearing the brand new pair of water skis I had just purchased the day before. I have to assume some responsibility for the misguided landing, you see, it was the first time he’d skied behind my boat and it was a little faster than he was used to and I brought him into the shore at the opposite angle to the one associated with his normal approach. Arnie survived without any lasting injuries ... his first comment was "my god .... I thought I was going to wreck your new skies” mine was "my god .... I thought I was going to wreck Arnie”
We have canoed down the Jock river in the spring .... freezing our you know what off ... camped in the wilderness at Canoe lake in November in a make shift shelter beside a flat rock that Arnie, Bill, and I spent the day looking for ... this because Arnie had read in a book that if you built a fire beside a large flat rock it would reflect the heat and we’d all be nice and toasty. To ensure his warmth Arnie brought along a newly purchased survival blanket, it kept him warm but also damp ... during the night the condensation formed on the inside of the blanket ... this seemed like just reward as the crackling of the blanket throughout the night as Arnie change positions along with the cold November night had resulted in a pretty much sleepless night for Bill and I. Oh, I forgot to mention this complete adventure was the result of reading another article that stated it was good to be out on the watch first thing in the morning if you really wanted to bag a trophy buck .... as it turned out we were having breakfast when the rest of the crew from the camp arrived at our ideal camp site ... as usual ... no deer but lot of laughs.
We canoed down many of the rivers and lakes in Ontario sharing wonderful times and creating memories. Arnie accompanied me on many sailing adventures, we sailed my boat from Goderich to Toronto ... Arnie’s first sailing experience I suspect ... and from Toronto to Windsor ... Windsor to Parry Sound ... and back again. These trips were spread over several years and were the genesis of many fond memories for both of us.
Arnie’s life was one of structure and stability, mine has been more the life of a gypsy. I think the thing that brought us together is a shared love of the outdoors and all the wonderful experiences it offers.
Arnie was a true friend, he was thoughtful, caring, non judgemental, and always there. I will truly miss him. If there is a place of awareness after this life I hope I get to share it with Arnie.
Your friend always .... Ross
