Obituary of Dorothy Stewart Drummond Moffatt

Moffatt, Dorothy (December 12, 1914 to March 3, 2010) It is with great sadness that the family of Dorothy Moffatt announce her passing at the Perth Community Care Centre at the age of 95. Dorothy was born Dorothy Stewart Drummond Swan near Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Orphaned at a young age, she was raised by her mother's family in Scotland. She attended arts school and trained as an Occupational Therapist. Her work brought her to Canada where she met and married Gordon Moffatt. Dorothy was an inspiration to all who knew her. Throughout her life she was a community activist and volunteer. She travelled extensively and loved to drive. Dorothy combined this love of driving with her social activism by delivering meals for Meals on Wheels, helping to found the Lanark County Food Bank and doing deliveries for them, and working as a fundraiser for the Cancer Society. She was a founding member of the River Guild Fine Arts and Crafts Store in Perth and campaigned tirelessly for senior's services both in Montreal and in the Perth area. Dorothy will be missed by her family: Patrick, Ian and Bruce (Sandra); seven grandchildren (Kelly, Tisha, Kimberly, Josiah, Julian, Christopher and Erin) and six great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by the members and numerous friends from the Perth and Brooke Valley communities. She was pre-deceased by her husband Gordon Moffatt and her brother Stewart Swan. A memorial celebrating Dorothy's life is being planned for a later date. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Perth Community Care Center for the care they provided to Dorothy for more than two years and for their kindness and support during her final illness. As well, the family thanks the Brooke Valley community for their support of Ian while he was caring for Dorothy in his home, in particular Jane and Karen. In lieu of flowers donations would be welcome at either of the two local charities: the Lanark County Food Bank, or the Brooke Valley School.
