So sorry to hear of Alan passing away...He was one of the most hard working people I ever met and a straight shooter. I could not have asked for a better neighbour. I still remember the time he pulled my bus over a hill when I was stuck in snow just 6 feet shy of making it over the hill....And there were many many others that were pulled out of ditches by Alan....I will miss not being able to drink one more beer with Alan and listen to some of the old history of the area....Rest in peace Alan

Dear Lynn and all the Umpherson Clan,
Our sincere condolenscences to all of you. I always remember Alan for his deep passion and love of his work at Umpherson's Mill. Always happy to explain how everything worked, and more than eager to show you around the building. He was a kind, gentle person, who was very much like his Dad, our Uncle Arthur. Thanks to Alan, three generations of Umphersons, kept the mill alive and well.
A job, and life well lived.
I know for certain that there will be some kind of "Kitchen Party" going on this last week, with the Davidson/Umpherson clan, in the great life beyond!
Sincerely,
Sheila Spence and Bill Kevan.

Lynn & family and extended family. We wish to express our condolences. I remember the evening down in the Wal Mart parking lot when we pulled up beside your car Lynn, and a gust of wind chucked my door so fast, I couldn't stop it hitting your car and putting a dent in it. Alan looked at it and said, don't fuss about it, there are other dings we are fixing anyway...Now freed from his recent limitations may he rest in Peace. May he always be close in heart and never far from mind. He and all of you are in our thoughts and prayers.

The last time I saw my Uncle Alan, was the first time I'd been to the Umpherson saw-mill. We went into the mill and Alan showed me around. He helped me understand how the mill had worked. It was powered in high season by the river that it stands over. At first, with a large band-saw, and then with a huge circular saw (sorry, not my area!), and Alan shared many details. I was delighted to get so much information. Then, he opened a small box and showed me the replacement blades for the circular saw and gave me two, which I keep in remembrance of Al, and all the men and women of lumber heritage in the Lanark area, including my grandfather (Lynn Gorr Umpherson's dad) and all the folks who gave themselves there. Thanks, Alan, for the things you shared, your knowledge, and all the care and precision you gave to your work. I feel first and formost for my Aunt Lynn, who gave herself tirelessly to her family and to Alan in his decline. I so appreciate her humour and ability to work under difficult circumstances. Also I send condolences for all of Alan and Lynn's family, my cousins and their children. May you honour your dad/grand-dad and find solace in knowing he is free, off somewhere, sawing logs.
