We were very saddened to hear the news of Susan's passing. We had the pleasure of meeting Susan in the Spring of 2010 when we were being considered for a puppy from her July, 2010 litter. She met with us a few times before we brought home our beautiful dog Abby (sister of Brooke). We were taken by her energetic and kind nature, explaining important things to our girls (aged 6 and 10) at the time and to us. We had the opportunity to visit with Susan and Peter a few times after, as they cared for Abby when we were gone away on March Break and summer vacations. Visits to her and Peter's home were much anticipated and enjoyed by our daughters, who loved seeing their beautiful dogs, learning their names and place in the "family tree" and admiring the peaceful setting that surrounded their home. We will never forget when Susan made a special visit to our home when we lost our first Golden "Holly", bringing flowers, hugs and words of comfort. We extend our sincere condolences to Peter, her father and the rest of her family and circle of friends.

It is with great sadness and dismay, that the Executive of the Canadian National Master Retriever Club heard of the passing of Susan Roberts. Susan has been a key member of the Executive for a number of years, as well as a frequent (and successful) participant at National Master hunt tests over the years. Susan has always been a hard working, serious retriever trainer and Golden Retriever fancier, a great asset to our Executive. She always contributed more than her fair share to the work, providing well thought out and helpful comments and ideas on issues, always positive and pleasant to work with. We will miss her and would like to express our sympathies to Peter on her loss.

I was so shocked when I heard about Susan's passing. She took a great interest in people, always supported them and was there to help you. I will miss Susan, seeing her in the obedience ring, having dinner with her and socializing at Hunt Tests. Susan was one of those really good people.

I was shocked and so very sad to learn of Sue's passing. Sue and I worked together at AAFC and shared an office at one time. We also shared a love of animals and particularly a love of dogs. At the time, Sue was volunteering with a wildlife rescue. I remember sharing our office with a wee baby squirrel that Sue was fostering. The baby required frequent feedings and was snuggled safely into the folds of a blanket in a small cardboard box. I also house sat a couple of times for Sue and Peter when they travelled to England. I stayed with the dogs and a pen full of orphaned baby raccoons that Sue was taking care of for the rescue. These were fun times. I will always remember Sue as being a kind and gentle person and a patient and generous mentor. My thoughts are with Peter and her dad, as well as with all her friends and family, at this sad time.

Peter, David and I send our deepest sympathy to you and the family. It is difficult to believe that Susan is no longer with you in your beautiful home where she was so happy and well-loved by you and her dogs. We shared many happy times together there and I will be eternally grateful for the friendship and adventures we had with our dogs over the years. Susan was the best listener I ever met and we could talk nonstop for hours as we traveled together to hunt tests. However, I preferred being in the same vehicle with her because following her could be challenging. Susan was an inspiration to amateur trainers and achieved outstanding results in multiple venues. She was also an inclusive mentor and delighted in sharing her knowledge with others. She has left a void in many hearts and departed this world far too soon. When our world returns to whatever the new normal will be, we would very much like to drop by and see you.
Love, David & Donna Houlton

I have no words that can express how deeply saddened I am to learn of Susan's untimely passing. We are all struggling to make it through to the light at the end of the tunnel of this pandemic. To learn that Susan didn't make it is heartbreaking. As the owner of Goldens for over 3 decades I have suffered the loss of many of my four legged companions. Susan was there when I needed advice when one of my dogs was also dealing with cancer. May your Goldens, your family and friends give you comfort and emotional support at this difficult time.

Peter, I was absolutely devastated to hear the news of Susan's untimely passing. On so many occasions, I would see you both at our favorite cafe. Susan was so proud of her accomplishments with her "Goldens". I remember too how she and I spoke of our joy of photography. Peter my deepest condolences.

Our worlds were joined by a mutual love of the goldens. Last November as I prepared to have my first litter, Sue reached out to me about a family looking for a puppy. While she was having a litter of her own, she thought my pups might be a good fit for them and she was right. That simple email evolved into a friendship that I will be forever grateful for. She provided guidance, encouragement and wisdom for that unforgettable first litter.
Our world needs more people like Sue but perhaps heaven needed her more. Rest In Peace Sue and may your family and friends know you are never very far away.

Susan was an inspiring competitor in both field and obedience, holding herself and her training partners to high standards, she made better handlers of us all. Field training was her biggest passion and she took it seriously. She was always on the look-out for better fields and ponds, and always planning challenging set-ups. It wasn’t all seriousness though. We shared lots of laughs, as we crawled under and through dense brush and over rocky ledges to find the perfect gun station, occasionally falling into ponds. There were hunts for missing ducks finally found hanging off car roofs after driving through town (we could only imagine the reactions of people who saw that!) and sunken canoes…
One of my favourite memories is of getting stuck in knee-deep mud and unable to free myself without sinking further. Susan slithered out to me on her hands and knees to dig me out. Finally free and both safely on firm ground, we laughed and laughed…and then continued on training, both of us covered in thick mud up to our chins.
Thank you for our beautiful dogs, your guidance and friendship. I will treasure the memories of our many adventures. Rest dear friend…I hope that you are somewhere with beautiful green fields and sparkling ponds…
Peace be with Peter, Susan’s dad Wally, and her family and friends who love and miss her…

Susan’s impact and influence on her beloved Golden Retrievers will be long remembered and impactful.
She was a perfectionist in everything she did. From her appearance to her dogs and all she did with them. She had a vision of how everything should be completed, and wasn’t satisfied until it met her criteria.
She was inspirational in all she endeavoured.
Our condolences and deepest sympathies to Peter and her family. She left an indelible impression on all that knew her.

It is hard to share a memory of someone whom you have know for 50 years as there are so many. Sue was one of the few people that managed to fit into our quirky bunch friends and who managed to tolerate us most of the time. Quite an accomplishment I assure you.
One of the fondest memories I have is when I had the privilege to shoot some pictures of her and Peter’s wedding. They were so happy and sure of what they were doing that it made the whole thing very easy. The reception was a joy, such a good mixture of friends and family, more like a family reunion.
Over the years, I would see her and Peter mostly on special occasions and I would always look forward to talking to her about things that were going on in her life, mostly dogs I think. It didn’t matter, she clearly enjoyed them.
I am sad that she will leave such a big gap in the lives of her friends and family, but it is some consolation that she will be so fondly remembered and so greatly missed. There are few things that are as great an accomplishment in life as leaving behind you people that love and miss you.
I am so sorry for your loss Peter and your family’s loss as well.
I will miss you Sue.

My thoughts are with you Peter, family, and friends.
Susan made a lasting impact on all those she came into contact with, and certainly has made an impact on the golden retriever breed with her remarkable production of incredible goldens.
She was quick to welcome anyone who sought to be taught and was a mentor for many. I will cherish the memories of time spent with her and the dogs.
