I spent most of my spare time as a child with my Nanny growing up, and so I was a teenager before I had a chance to connect with Granny and learn that I had things in common with my other grandmother as well. When I was about 16 or so, she came to stay with us for a week or 10 days. I can't remember why - Grampy was away or doing something or whatever and I distinctly recall she was having none of that, and so came to hang out in McDonald's Corners. She stayed in Wesley's room, which was still light blue and had a twin-sized bed against the wall. It was then I learned we had a mutual love for reading and escaping into a Good Book. After going through my collection of novels with her, I gave her Marion Zimmer-Bradley's 'Mists of Avalon' to read - a 900+ page fantasy novel that is so compelling, it completely sucks you in. You cannot do anything until you finish this book; your life is literally on hold. And so Granny spent 3 or 4 days in Wesley's bed, wearing a long black flowery robe, curled up with her book and the door only partially open. I would bring her tea and snacks because I knew how involved she was with the story. She would pay me a quick glance and murmur 'oh thank you Dear' when I dropped off food, EXCEPT for the time I brought her a BLT. I have a vivid memory of Granny visibly perking up and actually putting down her book, rearranging her long legs and her robe to sit up in Wesley's bed and enjoy her BLT. I was thanked with an excited 'oooh!' and an emphatic 'Thank you Dear!'.
that book and homemade BLTs will forever remind me of Granny.
