It was with shock and grief that I read in our local paper of Bruce's sudden death! I only knew him as a dedicated and challenging curler, a pleasure to play with and against, but we had become friends in the dozen years that I have lived in Almonte.
During after-curling team coffee chat time (I don't think Bruce ever drank coffee) we sometimes heard about his flower gardens and vegetables carefully prepared for winter in the root cellar.
Bruce had a good sense of humour but his cousin's story about Bruce's disagreement about hay being as hard as rocks sounds just like him. I also appreciated hearing from some other friends about Bruce's life growing up and teaching in Labrador.
Larry and family, I send my sincerest sympathy for your unfortunate, sudden loss. We will miss Bruce.

Met Bruce and connected at exercises and shared experiences from the North Shore of Quebec . Our community Doctor was important to Bruce since he had been delivered by him in the North.
I visited the incredible rock garden and enjoyed the artistry of daffodils and impeccable gardens.
My deepest sympathy to the family. Bruce will
be missed.

I got to know and appreciate Bruce through the Almonte Curling Club where he was recognized as a fine curler and a keen volunteer contributor to the Club. Bruce and his good friend Babes introduced me to the wonderful world of kayaking, for which I am forever grateful.
Bruce will be really missed. My condolences to Bruce's family.

Our condolences to Larry and Ella, and family. It is nice that you are thinking of all the good things that Bruce did, and the memories that he made. Jim and I taught with Bruce in Labrador. He was a popular and well respected teacher by both the children and the staff. The children learned many life lessons from him. He was up North, totally alone, so his activities like skiing and enjoying the outdoors were important to him. We had Bruce over for supper on many occasions. He put up with our growing family. He adopted our turtles which we could not ably look after and they grew to a healthy age in the school lab. He was a kind hearted person; ready to help people whenever there was a need. We missed him when he left Labrador, but kept in touch with him, as recently as last month. We are thinking of you, Debbie, Jim and the Wickett family.

Bruce was my slightly older first cousin. My mother was Bruce's father's younger sister and as a members of the tight knit LeGallais family, every effort was made for all the siblings to meet somewhere yearly or every few years. When we were children, the family would get together at Granny LeGallais' home in Port Daniel and hang out in the barn and fields by the house. I recall clearly jumping in the hay in the barn with Bruce and my sister Edie and brother Walt (aka Brother). The 4 of us would climb up to the hay filled lofts, balance ourselves on the timber beams while bracing ourselves on the barn wall. We would cautiously move along the beam until we found the perfect spot and then we would jump into what appeared to be the safest, best padded spot. We would sing "I was walking around the corner, not doing any harm, when along came a policeman and took me by the arm." It was generally mid-song when we each jumped. The boys jumped first, one at a time and Ede and I jumped last - being the girls after all.
After the jump there were usually comments and some disagreements about the softness of the hay. My brother once said "the hay is as hard as rocks," to which Bruce said: "the hay is not as hard as rocks, you would not have survived had it been so hard." Bruce, being a scientist at an early age and my brother being equally as argumentative at an early age never resolved the disagreement. They were both right in their own ways I suppose. We continued to jump in the hay for a number of weeks in the summer and the banter also continued. I shall miss Bruce and bantering with him. I am certain Bruce is "up there" bantering with my brother and all the LeGallais who went before us. My condolences to Larry and Elly, Laurie, Randy, Kathryn and children.

Bruce was a wonderful neighbour and a good friend. He and I exchanged travel tips and tales, and he looked after my cats when I was away. He brought me veggies (and I gave him cookies) and phoned about new birds at his feeder. We met every week at exercise class in Middleville. Sadly, during Covid, we didn't see each other often. He always spoke fondly of his brother and family. I was so sad to hear of his passing. All my condolences go out to his family and friends.

Mr LeGallais was one of my favorite teachers, as he was to so many of us who went to Labrador City Collegiate. It is so long ago I can't remember the years he taught there, but when I heard the news I felt a wave of sadness. He really was one of those special teachers who you never forget. I am so very sorry for your loss. Victoria (Vicki) Sumner Dicus

My condolences to the family on the passing of Bruce. The Thursday morning walking group (pre-Covid) was where I met him. We shared the love of growing veggies and flowers. He gave me some daffodil bulbs from his garden last fall and now, in full bloom, they hold treasured memories. After walking, our group dined at the Landing...special times with Bruce that we will always remember!

My deepest condolences to Bruce’s family and friends. Bruce was very special to Terry, Everett, Grace and I. When Terry and I first met, I quickly was introduced to Bruce and that was followed by many more visits. In the early days it was amazing dinners on his back deck. We saw some hummingbirds there too. That transitioned over the years to many more shared meals, walks and life events. Bruce helped us move into our first apartment, we mulled over the purchase of our first house with Bruce, and got married in front of his amazing rock in his beautiful backyard. He watched our kids grow, and still holds the spot of an emergency contact on their school forms. He was incredibly smart, and though I never was taught by Bruce in school, I learned a lot from him. We have memories of him in our hearts, in the flowers and vegetables of our garden, and in the gifts he brought home from his travels. I feel truly privileged to have met Bruce and get to know him. We will miss you.

My sincere condolences to you Larry and your wife Elly and family. I know Bruce often spoke of you fondly and I was so saddened to hear of his passing. We had not been in touch often recently after we had moved to Perth and of course covid restrictions but he was a wonderful neighbour and friend...very proud, and rightfully so, of his gardens.
