Obituary of Victor Leonard Somerville

Victor L. Somerville

August 14, 1948 – June 2, 2021

Born in Brockville ON, to Victor G. Somerville and Victoria Mae Philpott, Vic left his loving family on Wednesday following a cancer diagnosis on May 15, 2021. His credo on life was to reach for the stars, and always be prepared. His joy in helping others touched so many lives that he has not become an Angel, he has simply returned home.

Predeceased by his sister Doreen Somerville (Lou Bodig), of Guelph ON, his brother Donald Somerville (Ursula Kempinksi) also of Guelph ON, and his sister Patricia Somerville who passed in her second year of life.

Vic married the love of his life Gail Covey of Athens ON, August 22, 1970 celebrating their 50th anniversary last year. Survived by his wife, his sister Beverly (Bunny) Somerville (Wally Hollingsworth) of Brockville ON, brother Art Somerville (Dona Murray) of Langdon AB, and children Shawna Marie Somerville (Glen St. Pierre) of Georgetown ON, Lori Christine Somerville (Paul Lucchetta) of Burlington ON, and Victor William Somerville (Amanda Cole) of Calgary AB. Vic was the proud grandfather of eight – Tate, Chris, Ricky, Rebecca, Matthew, Tianni, Sarah and Patrick.

Vic’s early entry to The Brockville Rifles Cadets took him to sharpshooter status through most of his life. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting and was included in hunting camps in the area. Vic was a River Rat growing up on Grenadier Island and Smugglers Cove on the St. Lawrence River and his love of the water stayed with him always. Vic became a Class A Gasfitter shortly after he was married, working out of Rexdale ON, and later relocating to Airdrie AB. His career took him to many locations throughout Canada, the United States and Mexico where he had many great adventures, and had the opportunity to meet many people from diverse cultures. These opportunities lead him to open his own service company Bigfoot/Vicson Enterprises Inc. that he ran for 20 years before retiring in 2019. Vic retired with his wife to Smiths Falls ON and lived his remaining years surrounded by family and friends.

Vic wished to be cremated and due to COVID-19 restrictions we will have a Celebration of Life to follow once the pandemic is over.

Donations to CHEO for childhood cancer treatment are requested in honour of Vic’s great great nephew Grayson Eaton.
