Special Thanks

Our family would like to thank a core group of people who made it possible for us to keep Dad at home, comfortable and surrounded by those he loved. They met several times at my home, hammering out treatment plans and changing schedules of care to ensure that Dad got what he wanted most – to stay at home in his last days. And then worked tirelessly to make that happen.

I don’t think we would have got Dad out of the hospital and home a couple of years ago without the diligence and, dare I say it, stubbornness of our sister Alicia. She set up 24/7vigil for Dad while he was in the hospital and helped get him set up comfortably at home. And even after we bundled her back to from whence she came, she managed, from 14,000km away to monitor his care and keep us on our toes. We thank you Alicia

Mary Ellen, in the throes of cancer treatment herself, didn’t use that as an excuse to slack off. Besides taking her turn at the house, she kept the doctors on their toes, researching and ensuring that our efforts weren’t wasted. We thank you, Mary Ellen.

Joanne had been cutting Dad’s “hair”, as he liked to call it, for many years and continued that loving tradition even when there were only a few wisps growing on his bald pate. She ran errands, shopped with and for Mom, took her wherever she wanted to go. She made sure cheques got into the right accounts and the bills got paid on time. She was available at a moment’s notice to take over when someone couldn’t do their duty, even darkening the doors of the St. John’s to get Dad’s communion host to him when I was away. We thank you, Joanne.

Ormond, already skilled through years of practice with his mom-in-law, anticipated Dad’s needs, made practical arrangements at the house for Dad’s comfort, and most of all, saw to it that Dad’s life was as normal as possible – hanging out with him, watching the games – baseball, hockey, golf, whatever.

And of course, Mark, who quite literally devoted these two years of his life to Dad’s care. I can only imagine how difficult it was. Dad had high expectations and Mark met those without complaint. Mark was unfailingly loving, kind, patient and hard working. Thank you Mark.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
