This is very tough to absorb, we were once very close. An ultimate in being prepared. One such story, my first OFSAA he invites me to come. We stay in Paul Fong's condo which he shared with his cousin. He calls my name to wake just after 6 to get to Rick Hanson by 8, yes matches started at 9! I don't have much time and when I bent to toe my shoes..riiipppp, from the belt to the crotch, and yes, my only ref pants. "If only I brought my portable sewing kit!". Ed: "Oh wait, the only thing I still have here...' brings a cookie tin with needle and thread. Did he plan that? That far in advance..nah, say it ain't so..yet it's very possible with this guy. Fortunately I had round 1 off. No hack job...whew. many many road trips to help Reg. 5 with tournaments and Beach season. God, I'll miss him! Tweet on my good friend

My condolences to the family. I am so sorry for your loss.
I was lucky enough to have met Ed through Paul Wong back in the 90s. Ed was the most kind, thoughtful, amazing person who always had a smile on his face. I last had a chance to see Ed at a senior boys' volleyball tournament in Brampton in Oct 2019 where I had the chance to chat and laugh with Ed and see his smiling face. I will always remember Ed as a wonderful friend and a great volleyball referee.

Ed would email me when he was going to be down in this area - always " if you need any help, let me know". He once did 2 matches of a 12U on a Sunday afternoon, and emailed me back to say thank you and that he had a great time with the young athletes. He was the ultimate technician and supporter for everyone - he loved volleyball. There are so many officials that are stronger and more confident because of his mentorship. And he was a great friend. He will be so sadly missed.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Ed's passing. Although we only had the chance to work together a few times he left an indelible mark on me. He was a wonderful volleyball mentor, an ace electronic "fixer" and more than that a person I called my friend. While getting to know Ed, especially the time spent with him at the Invictus Games and OFSAA, I grew to appreciate his quirky sense of humour and his kindness. So many have been touched by his genuineness, his indomitable spirit, and his infectious love for the sport of volleyball, he will be dearly missed on and off the courts. My sincerest condolences to the Yu family.

I am heart broken. I so valued Ed’s friendship spanning decades and distance. He was truly kind and giving. So much volleyball, so many laughs, and so many heartfelt conversations. Thank you for being my “big brother”, confidant, conscience, cheerleader, voice of reason and the most wonderful friend.
To his parents, brother, Paul and family, I send my deepest condolences. He was a remarkable man and will be sorely missed.

One of the things I love about my involvement in volleyball and beach volleyball is my ‘family’. The people you form relationships with that you rekindle when you reconnect, no matter how long or how infrequent it’s been. Just like family.
I met Ed at Beach Blast in Toronto in 1998. We became beach volleyball referees together, and fast friends. We refereed National Tour events, National Championships and international events together. More importantly, we became ‘volleyball family’ to each other.
It’s hard to believe, and heart wrenching, that he’s gone, way too soon. It’s funny that he’s in the centre of this photo, because Ed hated being the centre of attention. He was always concerned about looking after everyone else, himself last. A huge heart. It’s been a couple years since we’ve seen each other, but I know we’d have hugged, reconnected, talked and laughed together on our next visit.
I will miss you my brother, and it is with a very heavy heart that I wrap my head around the fact I will never get to enjoy your company again. We will all carry your memory when I reconnect with ‘family’ members, again. My heart goes out to Ed's family, I am thinking of you all during these difficult times.
Rest easy my friend.

From the first time I met Ed, I liked him. I only got to see him once or twice a year but it was always a wonderful and enriching experience, he was always there to cheer you on, help you out or just sit and listen patiently. He will be greatly missed. Sleep well my friend, rest assured that your legacy of positivity and encouragement will continue in all those that had the privilege of meeting you. ~KM

My first nationals I had the privilege of reffing with you. You taught me a lot in 3 games and I continued to learn more from you over the last 5 years. Even though our badge levels are different, it never felt that way. You were so much more than a mentor though.
You were the smiling, bright, happy ray of sunshine that always had a positive outlook on reffing and life. You continuously assured me that I was going somewhere in my reffing career. You always told me how proud you were because of how far I’ve come; how excited you were for where I would go. You became a close friend who I knew would support me the rest of my life.
Due to covid, I haven’t seen you in a while and I very much wish this did not happen. I wish I could see you and give you a hug. I wish you could be around for when I get my national badge. I very much wish I had more years with you. In all of this wishing, I know you would have told me to stay as positive as possible. Well, I’m positive I will do my
best in reffing and life to make you proud. I’m positive I will do my best to continue your legacy through mentoring. I promise I will never forget you and I promise I will see you again one day.
RIP and thank you for being one of the good ones.
To his family and other friends I am giving you all hugs from a distance and thinking of you all in this difficult time. He truly was an amazing man.

I’ll never forget working a match with Ed at York. He was a seasoned referee and I was a rookie. He offered me a ride home and gave me the same advice I pass on to younger referees now. Ed wanted to see everyone else succeed before he did. Ed epitomized the concept of Pay It Forward with our referees.
Rest peacefully, Ed. I vow to be the same guiding light for referees that you were for me.

I had the pleasure to ref along side him in Toronto at the VC Nationals and even though I was having a rough day on the court he helped me to turn it around and he unquestionably made me a better referee. I will miss him terribly. Sleep sweet my friend!

My deepest sympathies to Ed's family and to Norma. Ed was one of the kindest and most generous souls it has ever been my privilege to know. Nothing was ever too much trouble for Ed to do for even a casual acquaintance. He delighted in being of assistance in any way that he could and never missed an opportunity to lend a hand and never expected anything in return. Ed has consistently been one of the most thoughtful and most generous people that I have ever met. Whether it was brushing the snow off of friend's cars in the parking lot before they got out, helping someone fix their tech problems, or making sure that a friend who was working long hours was eating enough by bringing them a cooked meal. Even though I haven't lived in Ottawa in over 8 years now, Ed always checked in with me. We shared birthday pleasantries every year since finding out that we were born on the same day, albeit a few years apart. Whenever Ed met one of my friends, he would remember them, because they were now his friends. He would treat them with the same kindness and generosity as he would treat me. He was a mentor when I was a referee, an import link in my support network during my years pursuing a PhD, and always a true friend. I will miss our catch-up breakfasts on my visits to Ottawa and hope that I can pay forward some of the immense kindness that he showed me over the years.

My condolences to the Yu family. I am saddened to learn of Ed's passing.
Although losing touch with Ed after I moved to BC, when he would see my parents, he would ask how I was doing and my parents would give me an update on Ed. Ed most often had a big smile under that mustache, and was a very generous and giving person with such a positive mindset and spirit. From our days going to school together at Glashan Middle School to our time spent together at Glebe Collegiate, we all knew about Ed's passion for supportive friendships and his love of volleyball. He loved to play and coach and apparently became a referee, as a way of staying connected to the game he loved so much. I know that Ed also devoted his time to helping with the family restaurant when it was in Ottawa, at Carlingwood and in Smith's Falls.
I am thinking about Ed, Weyman, their hardworking mom and dad as well as their extended family and friends during these challenging times.
