I was saddened to hear of Ray's passing and would like to send my sincere condolences to the family. I had the good fortune to teach with Ray at SFDCI where he demonstrated his commitment to students and his loyalty to colleagues. When Ray offered an opinion you listened because it was always measured and honest, and reaffirmed his commitment to the SFDCI team. Some of my fondest memories were being a part of the American History battlefield tours organized by Ray and Bob Sneyd. I feel fortunate I was able to be on the same staff with Ray Madden.

Dear Shirley, Sheri, Chris and family. Such sad news of Ray’s passing. One of my favourite memories of Ray is, when picking up the kids on Friday afternoons, his not telling my mother I had skipped classes to go ‘touring’. If I made it home when he was still there, I’d try to skulk into the house without him seeing me only to have him ask me, with a raised eyebrow, ‘what did you think of today’s discussion?’, and then he’d smile waiting to hear how I’d answer. My deepest condolences.

Dear Shirley and Family,
So shocked to hear of Ray's passing, he was a 3rd cousin of mine, he was such a good man, and teacher, I had him for history, and i so hated history, i think he knew i tried my best, and that is why i got a passing mark, and i felt so bad being related to him and not getting the marks i should have been able to achieve because of his teaching. I don't think there was a person around smiths falls that didn't like Ray, he was such great guy to be around and i know a wonderful husband and father, may the wonderful memories give you comfort in this time of sorrow, God Speed Ray

Oh I am heartbroken! My birthday friend!
Shirley, Sheri, Chris…… I am so sorry for your loss.
I can see him standing in the hall outside his classroom waiting for everyone to get to class.
I remember sitting in your dining room on Labour Day bemoaning the fact school was starting the next day and he encouraged me to just take one day at a time.
My favorite memory though was when I received a birthday card from him on my 50th birthday and he said “I guess after more than a quarter century of you sending me cards I should send you one”. It was so classic

To Shirley and all the Madden family, I am so very sorry to hear of Ray’s passing. He was my history teacher for a couple of years in high school and all the students, myself included, enjoyed his wit and easy going style. He also did a lot for the sports programs in Smiths Falls and was well known at the ball field. My sincere condolences to you all. He will, definitely, be missed by many. Here is a picture of Ray with his 6 brothers on the family farm outside Almonte, ON. Ray is the young one in the front middle. Ray was my uncle, my mother's youngest brother. He and Shirley were so good to us over the years, ever since we were young kids visiting with our parents, to throwing my husband and me a wedding shower at their place for the extended family, and even in recent years letting us set up base at their home in Smiths Falls while we travelled around the Valley visiting cousins and other aunts and uncles. After Mom and Dad passed, Ray and Shirley were like surrogate parents to Sylvia and me. Uncle Ray was a very special man and I will miss calling him to discuss family history and US politics.
