Many condolence to all his family. He was my father's (Eberhard Karsten) best friend here in Germany. It was a great pleasure to have met him a long time ago as child. Once he gave me two books by Farley Mowat when I could speak English. My father loved to talk about his memories of younger years when they both were colleagues. They never lost contact talking by phone or exchanging letters and postcards. I also loved to talk with Rudolf later when my father had died. It was always a pleasure to talk with him about a lot of things. I am so sorry to learn about his death. Now he is meeting his best friend Eberhard in heaven. In deep sorrow, Elke Karsten

I first met Rudy in front of my parents house in the spring of 1978. One day, to my surprise, when I got home from grade school, a friendly man was busy planting a bosque of paper birches and a variety of shrubs and perennials. There was magic in the air. The following day, when I arrived home from school, he was completing a new pathway to our front door. Magic along with Rudy's kindness and patience filled the air.
Several years later I had the opportunity to tell Rudy he had inspired me to become a landscape architect. We would see each other now and again, catch up, and chat about trees and landscaping.
Rudy was a kind man who will be missed.
Rudy, ruhe in frieden mein freund.

I was greatly saddened to see that 'Ralph' had passed away. I had not contacted Ralph for some time; now I wished that I had called the last time I thought of him. I met Ralph years ago with mutual friends Anny & Erwin Laux. Years ago I helped make hay for Ralph and I remember one early summer day helping clean out the barn after his beloved beef cattle had been in it 'all winter'. What a chore. Ralph put on a great lunch with good beer. Ralph named his beef cattle and was able to speak to them and then direct them when it was time to move them about. I helped him with his final cow 'round-up' as he was retiring from the raising beef cattle business - that was a sad time for Ralph.
He loved his wood sculptures and I admired them as I do now. I asked Ralph one time if he would do an owl for me, as my wife (Ann) likes owls. He had never done an owl before and said that he would 'give it a go' and by Christmas that year I was able to pay for the owl which proudly stands in our living room. Ralph loved to care for stray cats and then carve them showing off their favourite poses - We have one of his lovely cats next to the owl. His memory will always be prominently positioned in our living room.
Ralph always, at some point during conversations would bring up his family. He loved the German family and the Canadian family and liked to provide for them when he was able. Ralph always had a friendly smile that crinkled up his face and he will be fondly remembered by Ann and Bob Thompson (rural Perth, Ontario)

My dad abs Ralph worked together as orderlys at the Public Hospital for many years. We used to go as children to his farm and visit, he always ensured we had a good time. Ralph was a kind man and an amazing carver. I can see through his carvings the sadness that was deep in his heart from missing his Dorothy. He is with her now. My condolences to Ralph’s family.

Rudy, Rudolf or Raulf. To the Doef family he was uncle Raulf. The kindest fellow I had the privilege to know. I received trees from him many years ago. An avid gardener. He and dad had lots in common. His hand shake was extremely firm. His laughter came from his heart. He will be missed by all. Thank you to everyone for making his send off so heartfelt.

I loved my Grandparent's farm: the vibrant landscaped gardens, vegetable garden, house plants, animals, and the fascinating workshop filled with carvings and tools... looking back, I wonder how much it inspired my own interests.
Grampa created a quiet, peaceful life for himself, which he fortunately shared with all of us through his calm demeanor. We'll miss him.
Love Kristal (granddaughter), Aaron, and Shea (great granddaughter).
Thank you for streaming the service so that we could be "there" today.

I have only known Rudolf for a few years but in that short time we became very good friends. We shared a love of his farm and cows grassing in his pasture. My boys enjoyed visits and chess with Rudolf. We will all miss him. Scott, Hester, Carson, Wil, Everett and Oliver.

Rudy was a wise and gentle friend. He felt Canada had given him a blessed life. He had many great stories and few complaints. Rudy got his wish by never having to leave his beloved home. I will miss our Sunday visits. Michael and Linda Herbert

I was so sad to hear of Rudy’s passing. He was a kind and gentle gentleman, and a close friend.
He was a very creative artist. I will always remember him using his gouge to cut into a piece of
raw butternut wood, and creating a beautiful’ unique sculpture.

So sad to find out that Rudolf has passed away. I am Ava Haw, Pieter Doef's daughter and we have known this kind man since we were children. To us, he was Uncle Ralph. Such a gentle man with a big heart and great with cows. Yes, that is my fondest memories of visiting his farm and enjoying all the farm experiences he had to offer. He had very gentle cows. I guess they picked up on his demeanor.
