Margo, Doug, Bruce and Cindy. I was so glad that we could be there today, it was a wonderful sharing that your Dad would have loved. I remember Steve telling me about the Hydro One crews that travelled from Merivale to fix something at the TS in SF. They would drive by the homestead and Johnny and Diane would be on the front porch. When Steve was driving he would always honk and wave. When his fellow worker’s in the truck asked him about it he said that they were a wonderful family and are our friends.
Because Stephen was respected by his coworkers word got around and every member of the crew from Merivale (big crew) also did the same whether Steve was aboard or not. Happy Memories.

My sincere condolences to the family. I met John and Diane on a trip to Hawaii in the late 1970's. It was a 2 week trip and they were so much fun to be around. I lived at the other end of Brockville St, and I always looked for them sitting out on their porch driving by. It was a pleasure to have known them.

Dear Margo, Doug, Bruce, Cindy and families, We were so saddened to hear of John's passing. Smiths Falls has lost a real icon who dedicated his life to his family and community. His sportsmanship, sense of humour, generosity and friendship will be remembered by many for all time. He recognized sports talent on the spot, yet always supported and included those who had heart. When he presented me (Barry) with my childhood hockey jersey at my retirement, I was touched beyond words. What a guy! With deepest sympathy, Barry and Ruth Brady

My most sincere condolences to the family on the passing of Johnny. I have a little story to tell about 12 years ago the new rink it just been built and the walking track was open. My grandson was sick and so I picked him up at school but he didn’t look all that sick so I said I was going to go for a walk at the rink and he could come with me at the time the older lads were playing hockey in the afternoon my grandson the hockey player himself signing off and watched these older gentleman playing hockey when I stopped to ask him what his thoughts were ,he wanted to know why some of the players didn’t have helmets on because he knew you couldn’t be on the ice without a helmet. Well I said that gentleman down there without the helmet on it’s name is Mr. Halpin and he has played hockey for so many years and started playing before helmets were mandatory he wanted to know how old that man was and I said Mr. Halpin I think it’s in his early 80s my grandson‘s reply was I hope I can skate and move the puck around as well as that man when I’m 80. I told him to keep watching because he would learn a lot from Mr. Halpin That day my 10-year-old grandson found a local hero to look up to

Dear Bruce (Cindy) and Margo ( Doug) and families,
We want to extend our sincere sympathies on the passing of John. We smile when we think of him. He always had a gleam in his eye and a witty remark. One of my fondest memories will be the skating drills led by John. He would lead the team around the entire ice, doing figure 8's mostly, they were the best drills, without us even realizing it. We just followed John. He was such a smooth and effortless skater. We also enjoyed our visits with him and Jack Kirkland on the rare occasions that we were at Tim Hortons early enough to catch them. What a great friendship they shared. Of course driving by the house and seeing him and Dianne on the front porch, sending a wave and a toot. He will be missed by so many in our community.
Hugs to all

Our deepest condolences to the Halpin family on the loss of this special man. Johnny was always trying to make people laugh. As kids, we would often run into him at various events and he would always say to my sisters and I “Oh what cute little boys you are” just to make us giggle. Even years later when visiting town, he always had a big smile and a warm greeting. I will miss driving by the house, honking the horn and seeing that familiar wave from the porch. A life well lived.

I played a lot of ball games in my early years learning how to pitch with John on first and Bert Hobbs on third. They may have even taught me how to enjoy a beer or 2 after the game. He was a heck of an athlete and sure enjoyed his sports all his life. Always a big smile and a smart comment. I know it’s hard no matter when it happens but I just want to say it was a life well lived and he leaves us all better people having know him and enjoyed his presence. Bruce (Cindy), Margo (Doug) and family; I want to offer my sincere condolences on the loss of Uncle John. I was fortunate enough to know Johnny for more than 70 years. With my parents working in Milton, I would be at the cottage all summer, with Johnny acting like a "second" father. I have so many fond memories of Uncle John; Sunday morning and Wednesday evening hockey, Thursday golf, and of course every Friday at Doug and Margo's Shop, where Johnny would "hold court." When we were trying to think of a name from days gone by, or where a certain store was located so many years ago, Johnny would be our Wikipedia and have all the right answers.
I am going to miss his one liners; "one more and we'll all go home" and "sit down and buy a round" were just a couple of his favourites.
But most of all, I not only lost my favourite Uncle; I have also lost one of my best friends.
