Mary Lou was my teacher when I was a young nursing student. She was an excellent role model who always expected the best from us... and had a way of making that happen. When I began teaching nursing she welcomed me as a colleague. She was a wonderful mentor-- generous with her time and advice. She had a quick and inquiring mind. When we taught the same course and were preparing classes together, I just needed to say, "Mary Lou, I wonder about..?." and if she didn't know the answer she would not rest until she found it. We all benefited from her quick mind and determination to find answers when she led the way in collective bargaining for nurses. When she neared retirement, Mary Lou founded a book club that still meets today. She was fun and had a great sense of humour. Mary Lou was my teacher, my colleague, and my friend. My life was richer because of her.
