Obituary of Rosemary Judy Poynton
With sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother
Rosemary Innis (Hope) Poynton on Monday July 31, 2023 in Edmonton.
Mum, or 'Judy' as she was know by her friends, was born March 9, 1922, to the late Hilda (Southcombe) and the Honourable Justice John Hope. Mum was predeceased by her loving husband Arthur John Poynton (January 23, 2012), and son Thomas John (b.1952-d.1956). She is survived by her remaining children, David, Alan (Rhonda) and Anne (Daryl) McCartney and granddaughters Brittany (Adam) and Ashlin.
Although Mum's family lived in Perth, Ontario, Mum was actually born in the home of her maternal grandparents in England. As a young girl Mum spent many summers with her English grandparents, and her English heritage was a big part of who Mum was.
When Mum was 11, her family moved from Perth Ontario to Toronto when her father was appointed to the High Court of Justice (1933). Her father was a colonel during WWl, which inspired Mum to join the Canadian Red Cross during WWll. She was stationed in England as an ambulance driver. When overseas she met a "dashing young pilot" of the South African Air Force, Arthur, and they were married in 1947 in Toronto.
Mum and Dad lived in many places, and eventually settled in Toronto.
Mum spent 40 years as a member of the Sunnybrook Hospital Volunteer Organization, and over the years was involved with many of the services the Association provides, and at one point was President of the organization.
One of Mum's passions was knitting. With all the sweaters, jackets, socks, and mittens she made for us, and the many, many items she knitted for donation, we wonder, how many miles of yarn did she go through?
Mum and Dad both shared a passion for travel, and were fortunate to be able to travel the globe, well into their 80's.
It was shortly after the passing of Dad that mum moved to Edmonton, where she had an apartment in the Lifestyle Option Retirement facility on Falconer Court Avenue.
As per Mum's wishes, there will be no funeral service, and she will be laid to rest in the family plot in Elmwood Cemetery, Perth, Ontario.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank to staff members of the Falconer Residence for their care of mum, compassion, and companionship. Arrangements are in the care of Blair & Son Funeral Directors, Perth
