Obituary of Margaret Irene Quadling

Quadling, Margaret Irene

Margaret Irene Quadling (nee Chisholm) died at age 95 on March 27, 2024 just four weeks after her husband Christopher’s death. She leaves behind her sons Andrew (Lise Labrecque), Steve (Ghislaine Regimbald) and grandson Chris.

Born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Marg grew up in rural Pictou county where her love of agriculture was nurtured. She graduated from the Nova Scotia Agriculture College in 1949 with a Diploma of Agriculture and worked as a teacher for one year before moving to Ottawa for a job as a Research Technician with the Canada Department of Agriculture. In her spare time, Marg was a Wren Divisional Officer in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve (1952-1958) at the HMCS Carleton Shore Establishment in Ottawa.

Long-time residents of Lanark County, Marg and her husband bought land on Davern Lake in the mid-1960’s where they subsequently built a cottage. In the late 1970’s they bought a hobby farm in Drummond Centre, where they raised Simmental cattle. Marg held many volunteer leadership positions with the 4-H, Women’s Institute, Perth Fair and Lanark County Quilters Guild, of which she was a founding member. Marg was extremely creative. An accomplished quilter, she also loved sewing, painting, and fabric dyeing. Her sons also remember her pie-making, love of cats and reading.

Her creativity lives on in her sewing machines which were gifted to friends and in her fabric which was  donated to the Clayton group of Victoria’s Quilts Canada. Thanks to Deb Ireton and Elaine Foster who sorted through MANY boxes of fabric. Thank you to all staff at Lanark Lodge, where Marg lived after dementia made it too difficult for her to live at home. Special thanks to Mikayla Closs for welcoming Marg when she moved into Lanark Lodge and for supporting the family on the day of Marg’s passing, and to Carol Davidson for her compassion, listening ear and always being there for Andrew when he visited Marg. The funeral arrangements are private and in the care of Blair & Son Funeral Directors, Perth
