Obituary of Marshall Richard Stanley Hogan

Passed peacefully on August 28, 2024 at the age of 64 surrounded by the love of his family. Marshall leaves behind his beloved wife Lisa Hogan (nee Andress), his loving sons Kyle, and Keenan (Brittany) along with their children Layne and Keelah. He will be lovingly remembered by his siblings Lynn Hull (the late Larry), Dawn Kendall (Robert), Leeanne Andre (Cliff), Peggy Giff (Brian), Angie Purcell (Greg), and Mary Winkenweder (David); he will be greatly missed by his father-in-law Bill Andress, and siblings-in-law Dan Andress (Wanita), Terri Andress, Julie Wiltsie (Bryan), and Cory Andress (Siohban); as well as by his many nieces and nephews. Marshall was predeceased by his parents Leo and Mary Hogan, his sister Denise MacPherson, and his mother-in-law Cathy Andress.

Marshall was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on June 26, 2011.  Playing under legendary coaches Larry Hull and Louie Hart. He won the Don Thompson Memorial Scholarship Award in 1976. He was drafted by the CJHL Hawksbury Hawks, however, he decided to play Junior B for the Smiths Falls Settlers and won the league scoring championship. Marshall received a hockey scholarship from Colby College in Maine and stayed a year there before returning home. He also played for Junior A Brockville Braves and led the team in scoring. He won the Outstanding Sportsmanship and Ability award for the league. Marshall also played for the Ottawa Junior Senators. After Junior he played Senior Hockey for the Rideau’s and Goulbourn Chiefs teams, and that won the Citizen Shield in the mid 1980’s. 

Marshall was an exceptional ball player and played shortstop for Ray Madden’s Smiths Falls Redmen Junior fastball from 1976 to 1981. He won the Eastern Ontario Fastball League’s Most Valuable Player award in 1980. He was also a member of the Ontario Junior B Championship team a year later. 

After competitive hockey was completed Marshall was active in coaching in minor soccer, ball, and hockey. Among his successes were the hockey championships for the Bell cup in 2000 and with his Upper Canada Midget B squad in 2006. Marshall also spent some time as an Assistant Coach with the Smiths Falls Junior A Bears. 

Above all Marshall loved his family and friends, and they were always a top priority. He will be truly missed by so many. The families would like to thank Cheryl Van Iterson for sixteen years of friendship and caregiving, as well as Jennifer Levac (Kirkwood), Sherri Stevens his nurse, and all other caregivers over the last sixteen years. 

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at the Blair & Son Funeral Home (112 Beckwith St N) on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, September 5, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eulogies and words of remembrance will be shared at 2:00 p.m. If desired, memorial donations to the Gerry Lowe Memorial would be greatly appreciated. Marshall would have wanted to help under privileged children enjoy the sport he so loved.
