My Sister

Denise is my sister.

She often referred to me as her best sister. There is no better friend than a sister.

When Denise learned Doug and I were moving to Perth she was thrilled and in disbelief. I moved to Perth, myself, 3 months before Doug and the selling of our home in Angus and was living in student residence. This is when I feel I became Denise’s best sister.

She would call me regularly – just to say “ how’s it going”, how’s the job, do you like your office, is there anything you need, any questions about Perth?

She was so helpful and supportive. On a weekly basis Denise would insist we have dinner together. Sometimes she would cook, sometimes Randy would cook and sometimes I would bring dinner.

Denise complied a manual of tourist events, offered throughout Lanark County, for Doug and I to do. This included birds watching at the conservation area, festivals and treats available at the chocolate factory downtown.

I discovered Denise and I shared a somewhat silly passion for gemstones. I’m not sure how it started but we would tease each other about how beautiful large fancy rings were. In the end, I think we both have – a rainbow of coloured rings. Each ring represented our bond, and it did not matter if it cost $5 or $155 dollars. We would often comment on the glittering ring worn by the other.

My coloured stones of red, pink, purple, yellow and green is a reminder of happy times past that will never be forgotten.

Denise’s birthstone is Garnet. It is a spiritual stone of higher thinking and self-empowerment. It is a stone of strength and safety. It is a stone of prosperity and abundance, encouraging gratitude and service to others. It is believed garnet offers protection in the afterlife.

As with myself, we see something nice, we tell others. Denise saw a “cat ring” in the Burns Jewellers flyer and kept the flyer to show everyone. I thought it was a simple ring but it was obvious she loved it at first sight. HERE IT IS. I only wish we would have given it to Denise.

I am hopeful that this event helps us to remember, love and move forward.

Your sister, Love Cheryl

My Sister Denise

My sister Denise Ann Dupuis-Bennett

Today is going to be a hard day, but I'm thankful that you're here today. It is so kind of you to come and I know Denise would be so touched to know that you're here today to remember and Honour her.

I encourage everyone here to be positive and remember all good things about Denise.

Denise was born in Smiths Falls 07 January 1965 to Ruth Bullis-Dupuis

Our father Jimmy lovingly adopted her.

She was the first grandchild and only granddaughter to Lawrence and Irene Bullis. Denise would often boast she was Grandfather’s favourite.

She loved to make people smile. The fact that she could make others happy brought her much joy. Denise was always quick with a joke.

Denise enjoyed the holidays. Denise was super excited for Christmas Day to arrive. When we were kids her excitement kept our whole family awake all night. Also, a sister always knows when you’ve been bad or good – more than Santa Claus ever could.

I remember one almost tragic event I think it was the blizzard of 1977 in Brockville. Denise saved my life! I remember leaving PoW public school because of the blizzard without telling teachers, and walked home, along the way I simply could not make it and hid behind a wall. I am sure Denise and my Father were both looking for me but Denise found me and saved me. I believe if she didn’t I would not be here.

Denise moved out of our home in Brockville when I was a young boy. Growing up Denise often showed up unexpected and sometimes on my birthdays to wish me a happy birthday. She tied a yellow ribbon around an old oak tree in Whitby when I was deployed – thoughtfully wishing for my safe return to cut it off.

She organized a surprised birthday party for me at her home in Whitby; I was so stunned as she managed to get both of my grandparents to attend. Yes for sure, she was Grandfather’s favourite. They did traveled from all the way from Brockville.

Joining the military kept me from being home and seeing my family as regularly as I would like. When travelling home Cheryl and I visited Denise and Randy. We would often drop in unannounced to surprise Denise. We were always welcomed for a meal and to stay over. She never want us to leave.

One summer we dropped by, Denise and Randy were BBQ’ing; well to say the least there BBQ needed replacing. True Story. Cheryl and I agreed we were going to purchase them a new BBQ for Christmas that year. On a whim Cheryl and I stopped at a Casino on the way home to Bellville, Putting all our winnings on Red on the roulette wheel, one last time, we won enough money to buy the BBQ. Karma. This gift was well welcomed and received from one of the most humble people I have ever known.

Denise loved both our chocolate labs – Brandy and Abigail. Denise is our dog’s godmother!

Denise always made Randy’s time available for dog sitting.

Denise loved pets. She had several cats of her own – Socks and Pixie - whom she would band to the bedroom when the god-dog was in the house. Throughout her life she loved other dogs as well. Simply nature.

When Cheryl and I went on vacation, Denise and Randy willingly kept our pet. That one time Denise fed Brandy a month’s worth of dog food in just one week plus also bought treats. Our dog was well fed! Brandy loved Denise but after our vacation Brandy really loved Denise!! On this same event she even knew our exact arrival time in Ottawa and made sure our Driver Randy was there to pick us up before we even know of our arrival time.

Denise was interested in what was happening in your life. She would offer and I welcomed my big sisters advice. She would share the events of her life sometimes more than once in a conversation. She tended to keep everyone up-to-date on family achievements and spoke highly of her family.

Denise’s son John Lawrence was born 21 August 1989. The Dupuis family travelled to Toronto to see the newly born First Grandson.

Denise truly loved her son John. Denise was proud of John throughout her life, she always boasted to others on what he was doing, No matter if it was school plays, camping, white water rafting, his girl friends and his employment, or Skydiving. OMG how upset she was on that adventure.

If Denise called or you called her, she always dominated the conversation, some conversations where short but the majority were long, so long I think she forget her story and repeated the conversation. Most of the time you happily listen until she was done, Most times I think she just longed to hear your voice and did not want to end the call.

Denise moved to Toronto, Whitby and eventually back to Smiths Falls with John.

Denise met Randy 18 December 1999.

This started a love affair continuous for 20 years.

Denise and Randy have been inseparable they did everything together and were never very far from each other. They even worked side-by-side at their Willy Dog Cart.

I have seen first hand learned what love really means in Denise and Randy. - to honour, to love in sickness and in health. Randy you were and did very much for Denise!

I will miss Denise calling out for you.

Denise spent many days recently in the hospital as her health declined.

On Thanksgiving she came to my family dinner and she was in much pain.

It was commented before that it would take her a lengthy time to get up and down the stairs from her home. She depended on oxygen. We did not understand or see the obvious.

This was part of Denise’s character, how she gave and how she hid pain.

Denise recently learned of a compressed disk in her spine.

Denise simply could not move easily because of extreme pain this caused her.

Denise suffered this pain to attend the dinner. The make everyone happy, to make her happy to give all she had to give.

Sadly on 29 November 2019 she slipped away from us.

I believe Grandpa Lawrence and our Father Jimmy are with Denise and she is without pain. Denise will be ready to receive us all with open arms when our time comes.

The joy, sensitivity, excitement, kindness, and feelings that words cannot express is what Denise brought to our lives will not be forgotten. Denise I love you.

I do believe in signs.

A day after my sister’s passing, Cheryl and I were walking Abigail, and we saw a red fox on the roadway near our house, it stopped, it look back at us for the longest time, staying still and then turned and ran off. I do believe it was Denise’s spirit being freed.

Lovingly for ever Douglas
