Almost 15 years ago, when Natalie and I first started dating, she made things very clear to me: there is nothing more important for me to do than to win the approval of her Babcia. There was simply no one more important or more influential to Natalie. After getting to spend time with Babcia, it was easy to see why. Babcia was a force of nature. She could whip up a couple dozen galopki while supervising half the neighbourhood and finishing her crossword puzzle. She could calculate a complex set of expenses in her head before we’d clicked the calculator app on our phones. And most of all, she could love. Deeply. Babcia cared for her family, her friends, and her pets with all of her heart. It’s a quality that my wife has, too – one she no doubt learned from Babcia.
I feel so blessed that I had the chance to know her, to spend time with her in her home country and her adopted one, and to have her meet and get to know both of my children.
All of these years after we first met, I hope that I was able to win her over.
We miss you, Babcia. Do widzenia.
