For Mary Marguerite: The best friend anyone could ask for. That friendship began when I moved to Perth in 2002. It didn't take long to see how kind and caring she was. When she saw a need, she would be the first to step up and help. Marguerite could always be found baking for neighbours, the church youth group meetings, and of course, St. John's community dinners.
When she wasn't busy in the church, she welcomed 2 young men from the Honduras to stay with her to experience life in Canada through Canada World Youth. She also put up an out-of-town actress who was acting in a local play. Marguerite shared her passion for singing and performing in the church choir and on request. As a skilled carpenter she enjoyed making coffee tables, bookshelves, sofa plant tables, and even doll bunk beds for family and friends. At her age, learning to play piano was her wish and challenge. As a young wife and mother of two, she got a job in the government, where she was presented with a certificate of merit for improving work procedures in her department. Marguerite made a difference and continued to do so in retirement. To support Bernie, she supported and was on the Lanark Special Olympics Board. In her 70's Marguerite became a "Big Sister" to 2 little girls. Her mentorship made a difference in their lives as they brought Joy to her life as did her many pets. As friends, we travelled to Niagara Falls, Toronto and the U.S.A., to take in concerts, plays and bingo. Travelling by bus was a new enjoyable experience. Life was good until she began having memory problems. Assessing the Lanark Alzheimer's Association, exercise and day programs helped her go through these changes. She never lost her sense of humour and shared that with her bingo friends when she carried in a 12 inch elephant "for Luck". The laughter was worth more than winning.
Bon Voyage my dear friend. I have sadly missed being part of your life these past 6 years. I will no longer drive by your residence looking for a light in the window.
God Bless. You will always be a special part of all the lives you touched.
