Jim "Sandy" Sands was always a welcome (and often surprise) visitor to the Secrets of Radar Museum, the museum he helped to found. He'd arrive unannounced, eyes twinkling, with historical goodies to deliver and stories to share. He'd jump into a tour if there were other visitors, and if not, he would happily bend the ear of whomever he could (usually me, the long-time curator). The photo I've attached is from the museum's grand re-opening in September 2017. He sat a long time in deep discussion with Charlie Jackson, another WWII radar veteran and museum founder. The museum was created to tell their story, which had been forgotten by history, and to provide a safe and therapeutic environment for veterans to work and reminisce, and here they are, doing just that. To Jim's family, I offer my deepest condolences. He will be missed. May his memory be for a blessing.
