Obituary of David Gerard Ryan

Passed peacefully with family by his side on Sunday March 12, 2023 in Ottawa at the age of 84. Predeceased by his parents Jeremiah and Josephine Ryan (nee Lamb), his daughter Patricia Caitlin Ryan; his siblings Dennis, Kathleen, Gertrude, and Emmett; as well as by his brother-in-law Bill. David leaves behind his beloved wife and best friend of 58 years Theresa Ryan (nee Platt); his daughters Catherine (Neil), and Tammy (John); his grandchildren Jason, Lindsey (Ed), Kelly (Chris), Danielle (Cole), Courtney (Cameron), Caitlin, Josephine, John (Taryn), Angel (Dylan), Nicholas, and Dylan; as well as his great-grandchildren Cameron, Brayden, Zachary, Bria, Jaxon, Addisyn, Avril, John 3rd, and Kershaw. He will also be deeply missed by his siblings Imelda, Bernice (Bill), Vincent (Mary), Jerry, Marion (Andy), Raymond (Heather), and Thomas; as well as his many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. David dearly loved his wife, family, and life in that order; Theresa was both his dearest friend and the companion of his soul. He treasured time with his family and watching his legacy grow as grandchildren turned into adults who expanded his beloved family with their own little ones. He was passionate about his community and giving back to it with both his time and effort; David loved to swim and would participate in fundraising for organizations like The Heart & Stroke Foundation; he was a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years and served as the Grand Knight in Smiths Falls, which he was honoured to do. He was a proud Newfoundlander and enjoyed taking Theresa for a spin around the room whenever the music was right, or out for a night of square dancing. David was a mechanical engineer all his life, most recently he worked for the National Research Council of Canada where he retired after 15 years of service.  The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the nurses and doctors of the Ottawa Hospital Network including the General and Civic Campus, and St. Vincent Hospital for all the compassion and care showed to David and his family. Friends are invited to pay their respects at the Blair & Son Funeral Home, Smiths Falls (112 Beckwith St. N.) on Thursday March 16, 2023 from 2  - 4 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church (28 Hawthorne Ave, Carleton Place) on Friday March 17, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be held in the spring at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Fallowfield. There aren’t words to adequately express our profound loss and sorrow. The world is so much dimmer.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,

and let perpetual light shine upon them.

May the souls of all the faithful departed,

through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
